I'm doing my own work on this, but the machinist that is doing the heads asked to see the rocker boxes. He is very selective with his words so he hasn't blamed any particular thing. He did say that he has seen this before and thought it might have something to do with heat. Again its 114 degrees here now and I ride daily, he did mention that the tips of the valves had considerable wear. To me that seems like rocker geometry. We will find out in a couple of weeks when I put it back together with new valves guides seals and S&S rockers and boxes.

I think I recall a Raywood quote that read "the more you read and learn the louder the tick becomes"

When I switched to syn I swore the tick became louder as some have stated but my tick noise appeared to be getting louder so I was convinced I had a problem. After further inspection my coil cover was loose and this was causing the tick to sound more pronounced with some added pingyness....I think any who the noise appears to be back to "normal" after tightening up the coil bolts

I have spent the last 10000 miles riding it like I stole itit is there any other way to ride? But being as how I just did the pistons (.10 over) and a few other mods I didn't want to run the risk of dropping a valve. Been there done that (not on this bike) no fun at all. But yes you are right time for some even louder pipes. About ready to order the sinful pipes from FSD!! :up:

My ticking was due to a missing cam thrust washer, laying at the bottom of gear case. .o80 clearance when .012 is what you want!!

I switched the TP's for S&S and still have it, not as bad so what ride that bitch also I think my 2011 Ultra is louder!

Well FSD pipes are on order! Talked to frankie personally, hell of a cool guy really went out of his way for me. And yes a nice discount for being a Big Dog Biker. Also a D&M Spike air filter to go with it called D&M directly also very cool people. Even if it does tick when i put it back together, I doubt i will be able to hear it

Talked to a factory S&S rep at Sturgis this year (2011). He said maybe a lifter giving up?

It's not that hard to adjust all 4 pushrods. Look in the "how to" section with pictures and great write ups to guide you through it. I would do it just for the peace of mind. I really don't hear mine ticking but I do have loud pipes. If you hear it over your pipes, then maybe you have a loose pushrod. No expense, only time in adjusting.

I think this damn topic was getting into my head over the past week. I actually gave in and spent the better part of 4 hours on Monday doing the pushrod adjustment. I went 20 flats each.

Good news and Bad news. I did find the rear intake pushrod only finger tight when I opened it up, so it wasn't a complete waste of time, but within 5 minutes of my test ride afterward, it was back to tickin like a Timex again. But I didn't really expect too much, as I did notice a very slight warp in the front exhaust rod while turning it after seating. Gonna need to deal with that one soon.

I do have one question for you experienced V-Twin wrench turners though - regarding the 15 to 20 minute wait for seat time on each rod, what is the deal when the rear intake rod seats (loosens up) after about 1 minute, even after repeating the whole process on it twice? Is that one going bad too?

As you tell from my sig, I'm asking a lot from those rods.

If you can turn the pushrod after 1 minute, I would think you may have a lifter that is going out. I think someone mentioned that in one of the earlier posts on this thread. I'll leave this to someone more experienced with lifters, but that could be the reason for your ticking.

Cam profiles also affect the ticking noise significantly.
No matter how I adjust the stock comp cam(.565) it stills ticks.
Pop in the .600 cam and it purrs like a kitten.

That what sucks about having head phones on and the battery goes dead on them....take them out and youll hear stuff that would scare the hell out of ya LOL!!! Thats why I like the "loud pipes theory"...:zz2cents:
