a buddy of mine has an 07 K9. No motor work-stock- with exception of big radius exhaust. You can hear some ticking from the top end of the motor but everything runs perfectly and he has never had any issue with the bike. In fact, it has always sounded this way since he's had it. Is this indicative of some oncoming issue?

Well most make some noise you can do a pushrods adjustment and this will quiet them down as long as there's no engine issues wouldn't worry about it too much however I haven't heard the tick just answering from this end . I've adjusted mine on an 05 117 CI mastiff they did quiet down some but not all the way . There is a video step by step in the how to technical forum just do a search .

Ticking sound/s

When I got my 07 K9 I was worried about the same thing
I took it back to the dealer and I was told it is the sounds of the 117.
I have a friend who has a certified SS shop in Pa. I was showed a trick to do.
I went to a nurse supply company and I bought a stethoscope. When I start the bike up and its warmed up I listen and after a ride I listen.

Listen:
To the push rods (top & bottom)
Rocker covers (4 points @ each cover)
Jugs top - center - base (4 points around each jug)
Primary Front & Back (top & bottom)
Idle and at revs.............

A good wrencher will learn His / Her machine.

You will be surprised what you will hear and learn what is a NORMAL sound

Now I know this may be the "NEARD THING" to do, but you will learn YOUR bike real well.
Laugh if you will but it works.

Mine tick. Just think of it like its an explosive, you don't need to worry unless it stops ticking. :D

Yup. Come spend an afternoon in Dallas rush hour traffic in August. You'll hear stuff that'll make you cringe. Nature of the beast.
