thread sealer on banjo bolt?

quick question fellas...

I changed by brake fluid in the front brake and took the banjo bolt out to clean it up. All back together but have a small leak from the banjo bolt, which I put down to one of two things. Either its because I didn't use new copper sealer washers (got some now so will do that) or I didn't put any sealant (PTFE tape / paste) on the threads of the banjo bolt. My question is should you put anything on the threads of the banjo bolt?

Just use new washers and clean all the threads up real good. You don't want to contaminate the brake fluid with the paste.

I was surprised how much those little copper washers work. Or how well they work anyway. Good and tight too.I thought mine was tight enough but I was wrong.

I have also heard that you can heat them... flatten them back with 2 other washers on each side... and vice them flat.

Keep it clean with the New crush washers and check banjo for any surface marks too!

Annealing the copper washer with a propane torch will soften it to seal better. Use to do it when rebuilding engines with copper head gaskets like Triumph.

Don't overheat and let it air cool only!

I think if you heat em you don't want to quench em. It hardens them I think- at least it does for stainless steel.

I just had to rebuild my master cylinder and I just flipped them so the side that was on the fitting is now against the bolt/control. Works like a charm. They also had alot of meat left to them.

If you get a troublesome fitting that won't stop leaking, you can seal the threads with Blue Block or liquid teflon. I have those bling bling chrome fittings on all of mine now, and they were all leaking until I sealed them with blue block. Also the Harley crush washers with the little rubber O-ring work great.

Sorry,

The threads on a banjo bolt are only used for attachment purposes. Putting any form of sealer on the threads will not stop it from leaking. The copper washers are the only seal points.

I used the washers from Harley with the rubber seal on them when I assembled mine this past winter. Works great and the Harley shops are everywhere...
