What should I use to clean bolts/threads prior to reinstalling? Alcohol, Carb Cleaner, Contact Cleaner?

:agree:

I even chase the bolt threads with a die, and the hole threads with a tap. Specially if I'm loctiting them!

todd, i use break cleaner and then blow it dry with compressed air. i have run a tap and die on some where they were not clean. the taps and dies were in the company shop so i don't know whether the set you linked is good or not. i am sure somebody on here who knows will comment on that.

If they have old loctite on them, hold them with pliers and hit the threads with a torch for a few seconds, then a wire brush will take the loctite, and any other crap right off. I don't generally clean bolts with a die, too much hassle. If they are just dirty I wipe them with acetone or brake cleaner.

Lacquer thinner or Brake cleaner and a combination of taps & wire brushes (depends on what I'm working on). Gun cleaning brushes work well and you can get varying sizes.

Ok morons don’t chase threads with Die’s or Tap’s . You should be using a chaser kit. It cleans threads. Sorry,

I use a bench top grinder with a 7" coarse wire wheel attached in place of the grinding stone. Works 100% on rust, locktite, or anything on the threads. Quick too!
