3 Plugs went 18,000 miles OK! Avon 250 Cobra

Got a small bur sharp rock that punctured my 300MM rear tire. What are yalls thoughts on plugging the tire until I can get a new on Friday. I want to ride today and then will have to ride it the 40 miles for the replacement on Friday.
First day with my new bike got a flat, (nail in the middle 6")
800 miles later another flat! (screw in the middle 6")
7,000 miles or there abouts, 3rd flat and 3rd plug! (nail in the middle 6")

Ran the tire down to the cords showing and thought not much there to hold the plugs in... So I didn't ride much stayed off the freeway; rode local under 60 mph until I got new tires (economic & money flow problems -- I would not do that again -- was a Risky Bastard).

This Forum has educated me on the "quality" of Avon tires and after two plugs I would get a new tire cause it could impact the overall strength of the tire (especially Avon Venom) with that many holes it...

PLUG AND CHUG my friend ain't nothing special about a 300mm bike tire. Check pressure regularly to be certain it is holding. :2thumbs:

I worked one summer in a tire shop. The deal is, if a rock punctured your tire it cut across the chords. They will continue to tear and a plug will not seal it. If it tears fast you will have a big blowout like you see on semis when their tires shred, and you really don't want to be riding when that happens. In the case of a smooth puncture, like a nail, there is minimal tearing of the chords and a plug will work fine or simply use "flat fix".

Well, I decided to ride it. The ride was about 70 miles total. Check pressure several times, including when I got home. The pressure is the same as when I left. I agree I dont like riding on a plug and I need new tread anyway. New tire will be mounted Friday. I just need to ride the 40 miles to the shop.

Thanks for all the replies.

What kind of tire gets 17,000 miles? Running on steel or concrete tires?
I've got just over 17,000 miles on my original tires and they are still good. We don't get the hot weather like down south. I think that helps the tire wear and life. I check my tire pressure every couple of rides.

Why hell yeah I got pics of my good ole shitvette. Here is the "chick magnet" in the SUC mode (sport utility chevette).

I just retired that beauty last year 27 years old (bought new in '85) and 267,000 miles of service. May it R.I.P. :2thumbs:
