2004 mastiff. i can only get about 85-90 miles before im forced to switch to reserve, shortly followed by coughing sputtering and randomly dying fits only remedied by keeping the r's up and feathering the crap out of the throttle.

get to the gas station, fill from the right tank (left cap is swelled in place) can only put two gallons in.

what do you guys think?

I was worried about paint too. 2 layers of blue painters tape, a hair dryer and a pipe wrench. Old caps and savers off no probs. Be ready to pull tanks to clean out debris.

The chrome top screws off the cap leaving the inner plastic piece... and its in there good. Sounds like ill stay local til next weeks cold and start in.

Thanks guys.

I ran across a rubber oil filter wrench with a plastic handle, it works great and no worries on scratching the paint.

Don't know if this will help ya or not, but here's what I made to remove the paint savers. Once you get them out you can work on removing the rest of the cap. Then you can either replace it with a standard Harley cap or get a new paint saver cap from Landmark.

Just a chunk of aluminum with a couple of steel dowel pins.

I agree with Woodbutcher. I have a '99 ProSport with twin tanks/caps and the opposite side cap has opposite hand threads. The crossover hose between the tanks isn't large enough to flow and fill the left tank when filling at a fuel stop.

got 60 miles last night and sputtered into a gas station... tried to get the left cap out with big slip-joint pliers to no avail. it doesnt set level over the tank either so i wonder if some genius cross threaded it for me...

the saga continues...
