You can buy shrink wrap tape in in a roll as opposed to a tube. Wrap that and then use a heat gun ( or a hair dryer on hot ) to seriously seal it up. Better than just using electrical tape.

My 04 Chopper had the boot replaced once already and it now looks like this again. Just discovered it last weekend while cleaning and was wondering what's causing it. Nothing seems to be dripping on it, is it heat build up from trying to start with a low battery or heat from the engine or just crappy rubber? I would like to correct the real problem.

is the rubber boot hard? if so, probably from engine heat. if available, would be better with silicone boot. imho

My 05 Chop is cracked in the same place. Sure the boot is not the greatest quality and when removing the speed sensor from the trans, tends to tweak and rub the wire because of the tight fit with the tool. They should use a different compound or change the angle and direction to keep it away from the speed sensor.

My 07 had the same split boot when I picked it up. I just put a little bit of Liquid electrical tape on it. I've had good luck with the stuff on other things.

Lot's of heat going through this cable, and you are right, they should make it out of a more heat resistant material. Most starters will do this. Lots of good suggestions on covering this cable. A strong, well charged battery will help your starter stay healthy. Low battery voltage makes a starter to labor and turn slowly, causeing this cable and windings get hotter than they need too.
