The ten thousand dollar mistake

I feel physically ill, like I might vomit. The thought of how much money, time, and effort have been wasted is truly sickening. I hope at least one person can learn from my mistakes.

I bought an amazing Big Dog bike in 08’ and should have stopped there. The bike looked and ran amazing. I got greedy and wanted more power. I “researched” what I thought would be the best freaking combination of parts possible and bought them all – mistake number one.

Mistake number two was trying to find the best deal when it came time for someone else to install all these bright and shiny parts. I found a back yard Harley certified and trained mechanic to do the job. When I picked the bike up I could tell something wasn’t right. Once he had his cash he didn’t seem to care.

Mistake number three was when I bumped my head and thought I should try to make the Big Dog go as fast as humanly possible. For some reason I thought dumping a shit load of money into a Big Dog and “racing it” was a super idea.

I kept all receipts and realized I had spent $6454 in parts and labor to have a bike that produced near stock HP… and a lot of valve train noise. The parts didn’t work well together, the mechanic made serious errors, and I was essentially in worse shape.

I finally had enough and found someone who could actually help with all the problems. So…. the motor was taken apart and problem, after problem was addressed. There was so much shit wrong with that motor that I was amazed it made it to the shop. The cam was installed wrong, the cylinders were machined with flaws, and parts were damaged and prematurely worn. I felt buyers’ remorse in a huge way.

Then came the bill….$4054.02, to fix my screw ups. That is a total of well over $10K of essentially wasted money. Don’t take me wrong, the bike runs amazing. There is so much power I seriously slid out of the seat when I cracked the throttle on the way home. There is no more noise from the motor and it runs as smooth as silk. In hind sight, I much rather have saved 10K and had a perfectly good bike.

The clutch is slipping and will need updated, but the dyno shows 118 hp and 123 ft lbs. The mechanic feels a better clutch will add 3-4 of each. The nitrous is still jetted at 30 hp but wasn’t dyno’d. With the beefed up piston rings I could easily switch the jets to 50 hp.

I am going to try and refrain from mistake number five which would be using the nitrous and messing up the bottom end.

In summary, know what the hell you are doing before you regret it and be happy with the stock Dog.

I hate to do this to you, but I told you so. These bikes were not engineered to do what you intended. Not even close. They are barely engineered to do what they are designed for. In fact, every hot rod is unlikely to be dependable enough to ride to sturgis. I'd update the clutch and forget the nitrous. You'll brake belts and pivot bolts and trannies but it will be fun. Add the nitrous and you'll just grenade everything with time.

Nitrous in moderation will not hurt a healthy motor.

Money is gone, so ride and have fun:cheers:

Above is a true statement.............
I get requests, from time to time, to make heavy hitters out of this type of bike.It ain't worth it, and I won't do it.:bang:
Optimize engine geometry, set up compression for the combination, don't use the biggest cam in the book, and you'll have a ride that is fun, and reliable.:2thumbs:
Start spraying nitrous, and what you've spent will seem like spending pennies unless you have a lot of experience with it.

Nitrous on these motors is like playing Russian Roulette, NO WAY I'd do it.
No way you would do it? Be aware, there are more than a few of these motors running it with no ill effects. Most times the NOS is rarely used, and is usually just a novelty thing on these scoots. A shot at 30hp is not gonna rip your arms off. Try it out, have some fun, then just ride the scoot.

I love NOS, in moderation. Hell yeah.

Hey Jesse, you knew you were going to get the 'I told you so' before you even posted this, but I like the way you manned up.:2thumbs: Chalk it up to trial and error, because if you had not have done it, you would still be thinking about doing it! There is no telling how many times I have added something to a hot rod(cars, boats, and bikes) only to be disappointed and have to try something else. That's just playing the game!

Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased with the bikes performance now, it was just a long road with a bunch of unnecessary turns to finally get to this point. The performance is everything I hoped for, but if I was smart and had to do it over I could have stuck with one mechanic who knew what he was doing instead of three who messed up. Live and learn, right. I don't want pitty, I want some new owner to read this and think before they act, as I should have done. Engine mods are cool, but a crotch rocket is cheaper.

I like what you set out to do.
I wish the first guy was the only one you ever needed and you got to enjoy the pleasure from the first crack of the throttle.

I am on my 3rd transmission on just motor alone.
Baker said they are designed to be quiet per BDM spec's and for about 100 hp. Around 120 hp they just start coming apart. Tried to get them to put in some straight cut gears to help hold the power but were not able to accommodate me due to the design of the case. Said I should modify it to hold a Harley transmission that already has them in it but the primary would have to be replaced too. Snapped the belt in half last weekend and been through 5 rear tires. Do I want to de-tune my bike..Hell No.
Man I love this stuff.....
