The Dog catches fire!! (Pic)

Yup, what a day. I have finally got the bike back together after new wheel bearings, polish rims, new drive pulley, new drive belt, clean brakes and di electric grease everywhere, 2 weeks on the lift. (I have an 08 Mastiff EFI)

So I got it all together and took her for a ride. Every thing seemed fine. I stopped at a set of lights and smelled smoke. I figured it was some old oil or cleaning spray burning off from when I had her in pieces. So I stopped again further down the road. When I restarted I saw a big puff of smoke from the front end again, hopped off and inspected, nothing found. So I rode home and litterally in the driveway she cut out. I rolled into the drive, cut the power, looked down and the wires behind the Voltage Regulator were on fire!!

So I patted them out, waited for it to cool down and started my inspection. I found the main culprit was the wire that goes back to the battery. The burning was right where the wires come out of the VR.

If its not one thing, its another.

I have an important ride coming up in 2 weeks, so this was starting to do my head in:angry::bang:

I later spoke to Mickeetwo. He told me that he had heard of this before. So that was kind of a relief. He told me about the circuit breaker that the VR connects to. I checked it and the button closer to the battery had tripped, but I suspect that was when it cut out in the driveway. After it had caught fire.

I'm hoping its just the VR that's kicked the bucket, that I can handle. So is it just a bad VR? Or is there something else more sinister that I need to fix that caused it? Are there after market VR's that will do a better/more reliable job that the BD one?
Help!!!:loony::bang:

The only positive I can think of is that I have found a few new connections that I can Di grease that were under the wire covers Ive had to remove.

Ohh man:bang:
I couldn't agree more Train. It seems the more I try to do preventative maintenance, the more I find wrong and the more goes wrong. When I first got the bike, I just got on it and rode, everything went fine. Then as soon as I start trying look after it, she packs a hissy and something goes wrong.

Shit rough start! It's okay though can't get any easier than replacing the voltage regulator!

You could go with a straight Harley part I think its a 40 Amp Regulator. Although I know a lot of people on the Forum use the 32 AMP CE-320 from Cycle Electric Inc. Cycle Electric is made in the USA :flag:

Order it from these guys, I have done a lot of business with Powersport Superstore, they are usually the cheapeast on the internet I can find for parts. Also parts ship from Austin Tx so you will get the part in 2 days in time for the weekend  Oh ya they offer free shipping too!

If you just can't possibly pass up riding this weekend, and I can't blame you Sunday is supposed to be perfect here in Dallas 75 degrees, light winds. Run to the Harley dealer pick up whatever they have in stock at 40 amps and roll with it! It will probably be made in China, might have to replace it a few years down the road, but thats water under the bridge :D

Looks like a good idea. Only thing is. Looking at the image of the item, the connection that goes onto the motor looks straight and mine is a 90deg plug. Will buy US made so will wait to get the good one over a Chinese one.

I know the feeling, seems like if you just gas and ride all is well, start giving a little care and all kinds of shit starts. At least for me.

Woa, You are kinda fourtunate - could have been alot worse.
The fire didn't spread and it happend in your driveway.
Although the constant maintinence/repairs sucks. You will have piece of mind
knowing that you have new parts to roll with.
I like Cycle Eletric stuff myself .
Hope you get it together with no further issues.

This has happened to several members on here. There first thing I would do is get rid of the CB (Circuit Breaker). Put a small distribution post it its place, run you VR wire to it, and run a 40 Amp fuse from the distribution post to the Post Battery. The CB have been know to fail that is why BDM replaced most of the CB with a distribution post and a 40 Amp fuse when they had the VR recall back around 2007 or so. :2thumbs:

I agree with others on here, several people have had this happen to them as well. Sorry to hear this happened to you but glad it happened when you got home and the damage wasn't worse than it is.

I can see what you mean. I saw that the CD had tripped, but wondered why it didnt trip earlier, before it started frying and catching fire. I might call BDP monday and ask about that fuse. Maybe there is a kit or something? Im not savey enough to start inventing circuits for the bike. But with what Ive had to fix on this bike so far, I think Ill need to learn fast.

Im glad I made it home too. I was actually planning on heading out for a longer ride that day as its been a while since shes been on the road. Glad I stuck local so home wasnt to far away. From talking to Mickeetwo, he told me how he heard of someones bike burning to the ground, the front half anyways. So yea, could have been worse. I hope this is the last problem I have, at least for a while anyway.

Knock wood.

Cant argue with the recommendations Ive had here. Ill get one of theirs. I take it you order directly from them? Or does one need to use one of their suppliers?

Also, anyone know if you can retrofit the Circuit breaker with fuzes?
