Temperature sensitive Ridgeback

The long and short of this is my 2005 Ridgeback came from California and runs as long as it is 60 degrees or warmer. Yesterday it was in the 40'S, key on hit start and click only (not starter engage). Took seat off to see lights, cold engine no lights, try to start click with solenoid operation, head lights dim. (new HD battery, tight conn) Placed a small space heater near coil pack and battery box fro no more than 15 minutes. Tried to start not expecting anything different but it did and ran normal. Shut down to check the lights; key on all lights on then off, press RUN lights off, START eng run red light flashes, yellow on, green flash. With 1 hour wait, start was normal, temp about 43, started 6 more times normal.then waited 3 hours then click only.

I am at a lossssss. In addition occasionally the engine cuts off just riding in town like switch was turned off.

A post script to above message; garage warmed up about 7 degrees, key on green and yellow lights came on, press run, no change, start click only, headlights dim-no start. Space heater on coil pack and key switch, at warm-up key on all lights on, press run no change, start click only.

Try testing the key switch or replacing it.

Mine does the same thing. Mine is the EHC it gets cold and shrinks . Than contacts inside the EHC and cuts the bike off. I put insulation around the EHC it has worked fine after that .

I knew someone with a k9 like this. He would use a hair dryer on ehc. I was told it means the ehc is ready to go out.

My 2005 Ridgeback was cowered in my garage beginning october 2013.
No heat in the garage, winter in Sweden means down to 0 F.
Tested to start my beauty last week, means 4 monthts in the cold, BUT on a charger.
First click on the button and he started directly.
No problem with cold EHC.

EHC -- My first K-9 developed this problem and I actually had to warm it up one night using a gallon of hot water pouring slowly over the ehc -- sure enough started after that.

Replace it as it will generally get worse.

Thanks guys,at this point I really want to go to dual Vulcan coils since the key and start button are off the handle bar. But that sounds like a headache without a diagram. Then there is that all wire??? that eliminates the ehc. My confidence only goes soo far.

Hey Bobby, did you ever talk with John Millar about this? I was talking with him today and he's more than willing to help you out. He's a great guy with many years of experience on Big dogs and a lot of other bikes. I was in the BDM training classes with him. Give him a call. Hey Nuke, You and a few others were right on with the key switch. Who would have guessed it would be the switch. I jumped the wires in the harness and off she went. It should be that easy with TOL.

if anyone is having to "heat" the EHC before it goes, then I would say there are "dry joints" on the PCB. This can happen with vibration and age. If and when it happens to my bike, I will be getting into to sealed EHC any way I can and just resolder the joints.
