Tappet Cap

Where can you get an after market cap that has a hex head instead of the Flat screwdriver. Chrome would be nice also. Have seen to many EVO's all scratched up from screwdrivers slipping. Im sure it was made this way so as to not over tighten and crack the block, but I will be careful.

Funny you should mention this but I cant even get my tappet cap off! I got the biggest damn flat head I have and the fucker wont budge.

Is there any better tool to use for this? I stopped F'n with it cause I didn't want to strip it.

I have very carefully removed them with Vise Grips, but it will fuck up the cap, so get the gauge to replace.

I don't usually use vise grips to remove bolts, but it does come out very easy once you get a grip on it. I also have an impact driver......that's a tool that has a bit in the end that you hit with a hammer and it spins. Just in case you didn't know what an impact driver was.

You could get a LONG screwdriver so you could put a bunch of weight on it and use a pipe wrench to turn the screwdriver – if all else fails you can use a small nipple and run a welding rod inside the nipple and weld it to the plug then use a pipe wrench to remove the stubborn rascal, you would need a new one to replace (if there is a will there is a way)

Is it a good idea to weld on the block?? Welders and electronics don't go well togeather.

One would only weld as a last resort (tack weld) It would take a damn good welder to do it anyway and one would have to use common sense when doing it, I have done this before when (big) bolts break off inside and you can’t get to them.

Just curious if they switched to a regular bolt head at some point. I have an 08 and no screw head. Bought bike new.

I was thinking about the arc going across the bearings and or the electronics, probably need to ground directly to the work, which would be hard to do.

I had a large screwdriver with a hex up near the handle. Slid a wrench up on it and was able to break it loose. Once you break it loose, it will come right out

S&S makes a special tool for this. Mine came with a chrome hex bolt though. You can get then in any v-twin catalog for a few bucks.
