TANK OVERFLOW

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Sometimes when I fill my tank and then park, say with less than 5 miles or so of riding on the new tank, the gas will overflow after I've put it on the kickstand and walked away. I DO NOT fill it all the way up, I always fill it to the bottom of the internal bracket when you look into the tank, so it's below the overflow tube.

This doesn't happen every time, but it has caused the paint to bubble up twice now... anyone got anything for this? It's never happened to me on any other bike I've owned.

I've never had it happen on my Big Dog but it's happened on other bikes. When you put the gas in it's cold but if you park it soon after filling up with that hot engine under it it can expand a lot, especially in the sun. It's always best to wait and fill up when you head out the next time or make sure you underfill it even more.

I think if you're filling to the bottom of the paint saver, you're filling too high. I stick the nozzle in until it touches the bottom of the tank/top of the tunnel. I let the pump stop itself and never top off.

I had this same issue on my 2008 pitbull and I have been through several gas caps. At first it was a venting issue but now that I have been through 3 caps I requested a new tank. Bascially big dog said that they recognized that there was an issue with this and were working on a solution but did not have a solution yet. This issue was just on Pitbulls and I am not sure about Mastiff's. I was also concerned about my paint but they said they would fix it if something happened. I switched back to the old style cap and have not had an issue yet.

Had that same issue on my '07 Mastiff. Someone mentioned to just turn the gas of every time -- so I do. That took care of that...

Anybody want a once used "McCuff" filler? I caved in and bought one of those stupid things (after seeing the McCuff Bike episode of American Chopper), used it on my new K9 and the tank puked gas all the way home...all over my new paint! :angry: :bang:

Anyway, I'm taking the aforementioned advice and never completely topping my tank off again....

I mean "person" they sold those to!! :roll: :roll: :roll: That episode cracked me up when Mikey was given demonstrations on how well it worked as he was pouring gas all over people's bikes. I see the need but it's only good for some bikes and who the hell wants to carry that thing around all the time? My bigger complaint about filling up is that on some motorcycles you have to use your other hand to pull back the vapor recovery boot that is mandated in a lot of states just so the pump will operate.

Yep...that be me! :loony: Oh well, had to give it a try. I think the concept might work better with a more horizontal mounted gas tank (pro-street style) with NO paint saver ring. Anyway...'McCuff' is in the "X-Files" now for me!

Marco - that sounds about right.

Moe - I don't fill it up to right under the paint saver ring... if you look into the tank there's a welded "bung" about 1.5" below the top of the tank (maybe more like 2"), I fill it to just under it. I ride about 86+ miles every day, put on 11K since 1 Nov 08, fill up every other day... I can't "1/2 fill" it. But mental note made.... prob have to put less in.

Steve - turn the gas off? It's coming out the top, the fill cap. What would turning the gas off do?

Didn't realize it was coming out the top. My problem was the gas was coming out the overflow on the carb -- after the bike sat a while. I always fill mine one or two inches from the top cause I don't want gas all over the tank.

Glad you asked this question. I have an '05 Ridgeback, and have the same trouble at times. Guess I been filling it a little too high. Already got one bubble in my paint!:angry:

Yeah man, just watch it fillin' up, don't go too full and you'll be good otherwise your buddies heat and expansion will come to see ya. The BDM pro streets seem to be more prone than the chop's. That's been my experience anyway. :up:
