Taking a serious look at this 05 chopper, what are the issues?

You really need to do some engine work to bump compression to take advantage of the 600's 55 degree intake closing. This is a bit late for the stock 9.6:1 compression ratio. The late closing allows more air and fuel to enter the engine at high rpms, but it comes at the expense of a loss of cylinder pressure. The result is a drop in low and mid range torque. The 585 has a 45 degree closing, which will produce more cylinder pressure. This will produce a higher torque curve.

From WSW website: "Note: This cam will reduce your lower end power band, on stock Big Dogs, due to the low, roughtly 9.6:1, compression ratio and the stock locked Ignition Module in the Big Dogs. To really get the most out of this cam WSW recommends raising your compression a minimum of half a point and installing the Thunderheart Programmable Ignition Module. If you want to get the most from your motor without doing major engine mods go with the 585 cam and the Thunderheart Programmable Ignition Module."

Talk to Curtis. He put the 600 in mine with stock compression. I felt no loss of midrange torque and like you said, way more at higher RPM.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but what year is your bike? If it's 07 or later, the stock 546 cam has the same late 55 degree closing, so there wouldn't be a noticeable difference in bottom end torque.

Okay got my BD back last week, with the engine changed to a 117. It is 20 over, new pistons, shaved TP heads, shaved sleeves, brass guilds, and 585 cam. All done by Gateway BD (Ross Bike Parts), and S&S said that was the place to take it for engine work around St. Louis. Josh does the work on my bike all the time, and never had a problem with them. Now have to wait for a warmer day to ride, but it has unreal power, and sounds like it is ready to eat up the road. A tad more than $4000, to get it done, and would have cost that much to rebuild mine. They are keeping mine, when they get time they will tear it down, and fine out where all the metal came from. Also the engine is show polished, so no more cast dull engine. Loving it.

Well...I must be honest...I've replaced just about everything but the motor and frame...it has problems...but if your patience and perseverance level is high,go for it..and your wallet is full...I paid 8k ..invested another 3k into it..some upgrade parts..but mostly just so I could keep it running...but it's a sweet ride..worth every penny...if you can afford it..you won't be disappointed or regret it
