tach flashes at startup

I searched for a thread on this, but couldnt find one - sorry if it is a repeat:

When turning the key to on, my tach does a sweep all the way and then back to zero. Once the bike is started, and in neutral, the tach sometimes flashes several times. Once I put it in gear, it stops flashing. Th tach works fine, but just curious as to whats up with this? I am sure its a self check diagnostic, but it doesnt do it everytime.

When it flashes it means the idle speed is too low... probably due to it being cold if it doesn't do it once the bike is warm.

And that is where a nice cruise mate comes into play... set the idle up to warm the bike... release and ride!

This will register on the EHC as well. I was told that if you have a warranty claim that Big Dog looks at the low hits along with the high hits. Low idle also means the oil pump is turning slower, thus producing low oil pressure. Low idle sounds cool but it beats the hell out of the bottom end of the motor.

When it idles below 1000 RPM, the tach flashes. This scared the shit out of me when it happened too so I did a little reading

When I picked my bike up from the dealer they had it turned down and the lights would flash. I have mine set at about 1050 at hot idle:hi:

re

When you turn the key on, it does a self boot thing. I looks like it does a shut down sequence to when you hit the off button. I always let the speedo lights complete what they are doing before I start and before I turn the key to the off position. I know computers hate to have power cut when they are in the middle of a shutdown and you really can't start to work with the software 100% before you computer is done with it's cold boot. Weird things start happening soon over time if this is a habit. I'm still on my 1st ehc and speedo coming up on 10k miles.
