Thanks! that should do it. Think i am going to have to remove whole speedo to change just board??
Never done it myself but the service manual doesn't indicate that you have to remove the speedo to do it. I suppose if you can get at the allen screws underneath to release the ring you should be okay. Just be real gentle with it because they are a bit delicate. I found that out the hard way with the shop that installed my hand controls. At first they said it was bad but then after I looked it over real well it was clear they just weren't careful and pulled the wires loose from it. Then when they put the new one in they didn't line it up right so the lights aren't as bright as the should be. I would fix it but why whene I have a new Dakot digital gauge coming.

The speedo comes out of it's case/shell and the outer bezel holds the speedo and outside of it is the tach board. You can get to the tach board without removing the speedo but it's only held in by the retainer with the two small nyloc nuts. Be easier to take it all apart then will enable you to clean it up and give it a good shine. Easy to do. The Service Manual has the full description of this assembly and I think I have a pic of it in my gallery somewhere but I'm not looking cause there are too many pics in there! :D

Also, keep a close eye on the speedo retainer because it flexes pretty easy and if it is bent out just a little when you tighten it back up it can actually tighten up into the tach board and not on the little notches that line it up.

the tach bounces back and forth from the green to red ...
If you put it back correctly and used die-electric grease in the connectors then I would say the bouncing tach is due to a weak battery. What's the voltage at rest on the battery? My battery last year coming home from Sturgis crashed in Missoula, MT and just before it went the tach started doing weird shit. I attributed it to rain/hail but never had an issue with it again after the new battery.

Just a thought

Oh, and good job an tackling this by yourself and the starter install. :2thumbs:

I dont know the voltage on the battery .. but its like 1 month old. i bought it from HD before i knew any better for $160 installed .... yah installed!? I didnt use dielectric grease .. where do i get that? I havent rode the bike with the new board installed either ... i dunno if that matters. I called BD because they sold me the board and they said my idle might be too low and its not registering.... clean sensor ... and ride it..
Whutcha think? I cant imagine I installed it wrong ..... it was plug and play....

Turn up the idle to light up two lights on the tach and that should do it
