Hey guys and gals, I was at my BD dealer and asked the owner (who is an awesome mechanic) about using synthetic oil in the Dogs. He said the bearings in the motor (rod and main) are ball bearings and synthetic works too good. He said the balls will glide instaed of roll and that would wear flat spots on them. Anyone ever heard this. I use amsoil in everything I own but the bike until it get a few more miles:choppersmiley:

I changed mine to amsoil at 500 miles (my 03 Mastill also) and I have just over 56,000 miles on it. I change it about every 5000 miles. Guess I burned out my motor according to your mechanic!
S&S recommends synthetic and they make the motor your bike has.
HD uses syn in all there bikes now.

I changed to Synthetic in the Harley at 1000 miles and will be changing to Syn in the Dog come 1000 miles. I change the oil every 4000 miles....

I am going to switch to Amsoil next oil change. I wanted to do it at 2500 miles, but the BDM dealer suggested that I give it another 2500 miles.
The thing about synthetics is they do not break down or wear out like regular oil. Thats the main difference. As far as being too slippery, no, not really possible.

Hell, if a man doesent restart some threads we will eventually run out of shit to talk about. My opinion is run synthetic and make it Royal Purple. I dont know if its the best synthetic or not, but. I research everything for days on the computer for days before I buy anything and they say that stuff is ausome. HOT ROD Mag, did several test on it and confurmed everything that the company says it does.
I did learn one thing though. I put synthetic oil in a car with 100k on it. When I changed the plugs, there was oil on them. I asked my mechanic about it. He said the car had to many miles on it to start synthetic oil. He said the the cylinders had to much wear on them and the syn oil was squeezeing through.

Thanks for the heads up. Been putting synthetic in the Suburb with 150k on her hoping that she'll go to 300k, no fouled plugs thankfully but a good thing to take note on.

No, you shouldn't touch the motor drain. I drain the tank then put the plug back in then fill the tank. I remove the filter then start the motor and run it and let the oil drain into the bucket till clean oil comes out. Then I put the filter back on.
I use a re-usable filter as many on here do. K&P re-usable filters.

I've heard a lot of things in the debates over synthetic versus regular oils but this is a new one to me. If there wasn't enough friction (caused by contact) for the ball bearings to roll then how could they possibly be worn? Ask him to take a small scrap of wood, place it on a smooth flat surface and try to sand it down with one hand with nothing holding it in place and tell me if it moves before you can sand it down.
A lot of companies have done tons of real scientific research and testing on the benefits and comparison of the two. You can probably trust them as much as your mechanic on this one.
