Ok, I'm sure there is a reason and someone is going to tell me.

So I have a 08 K-9 with bad shocks. I ordered a set of 422 HD and come to find out they don't fit (transmission bracket is in the way in the front apparently).

Now comes the dumb question -- why can't the shocks be put in backwards. Afterall it's and in out motion -- does the pivot point move too much or what?

I know I'm going to get slammed for this but I need to know.

Shouldn't be an issue if there is room.

I've never had mine off as long as the width of both eyes are the same.

On Jeeps some folks flip the rear shocks upside down so the larger body is on top to allow more clearance for movement with the axles. The only issue is you need shocks that manufacturer allows to be mounted upside down or else ones that are not have seal leaks (almost all manufacturer say upside down is fine). Considering these shocks are horizontal, can't possibly have a problem as the design of the seal can't change.

I could be real wrong here but the shock is designed to pull hard one way and easier the other. If you reverse them then on a bump they will collapse easy and rebound hard... Also, those HD shocks are REAL hard.... Ask me how I know....

well 2 up without luggage I'm running about 450lbs right now -- I'm open to suggestions.
I knew some car shocks are set that way wasn't sure how much difference there was between collapse and rebound on the mc shocks.

Well, I'm 185 and the wife is 100lbs so we have less weight. with the HD shocks it feels like a hardtail with both of us on the bike. It may work better for you.

I'm by far not the genius on this but I believe that horizontal shocks are designed to pull one way and push the other.. but ur not gunna be a big fan of them hd shocks.. rough ride I believe.. but don't quote me.. if I were you I'd try it and see what u got after break in time.... about 500 miles

On some late model Harley's they had the shock mounted upside down front he factory. It prevented bolting on saddlebags. Harley put out a service bulletin and they just said flip them over.

Softail harley shocks are adjustable. Coming from the factory at the lightest setting for 180 pounds and adjustable for up to 400 plus I believe. At least the Harley heritage is adjustable takes a 10 dollar spanner wrench. I'm cheap and made one outta quarter x 2 flatware. It works.
BUT, we still have the question can you reverse them? I don't think so.....

don't know if they'll fit reversed even just a thought. But I can't see what difference it would make

In both cases when the pull and push direction are still the same, just changing what gets pulled per se.

I also found Ultima shocks that 1 1/2 diameter for about 120/pair
