How does it compare to Daytona?, How is lodging? thinking of renting a cabin and taking the wife and kids, take a couple nights into Sturgis then a few sightseeing with the family. I only have a week so need to know as much as i can. Thanks ahead

Here is some info for you
72nd Annual 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally | Black Hills Motor Classic | City Of Riders | Events | Concerts | News | Guide | Lodging | Webcams
The 71st Anniversary Sturgis Rally 2011. Schedules, Lodging, Merchandise, 100,000+ Sturgis Rally pictures and more....

There is great rides around the area- black hills, Badlands, Devils tower to name a few.

I have been going to Sturgis since around 1999 always something new to see. We stay on the south side of sturgis in Peidmont. It is cheaper there and much quieter when you want to sleep.

I have been to Daytona and it is different but same. All of the venders are there, but Daytona seams bigger and you can see more skin.

Go to Sturgis.com and click on rally rental. people rent there homes all year long. Lot's of family activities around Rapid City. Crystal mines to go down into, fossel digs to see and do, Custer state park, Wall Drug and the Badland National park, Devil's tower 60 miles to the west of Sturgis. To the south of Sturgis 15-20 miles is Deadwood. DON"T miss touring the cemetary. Calamity Jane and Wild Bill are buried there. Also tons of history like the Yellow fever epidemic which took out whole families. Besure to go to Big Al's Casino bar next to the Big Dipper ice creamery. Needles Hwy which I believe is 16A is a must. Go to Nemo, Mt Rushmore is a must for everyone, along with Crazy Horse. Hill City and the town of Custer are fun to stretch your legs at. Very cool rail road musium in Hill City. Another must is 16 miles west of Sturgis to Spearfish and ride Spearfish Canyon rd. 2012 will be our 9th time to go to the Sturgis Rally. We go through Rally Rentals and rent the same house in Spearfish. We are there for 5 days and put on average 1200 -1500 miles during the rally. This yr we are taking 2 other couples.

Apparently someone has never stayed at Buffalo Chip!! in 1999 & 2001 we stayed there. In 2001 we set up our RV next to Nudist.com. 5 girls and 1 guy and non of them wore clothes the whole time. Probably the same amount of nudity at the chip as at the ROT rally.

We go every year. Last year we stayed in the Budget Host Motel in Rapid City. they have different size rooms to handle a full family. It's a old motel but clean and secure building wraps around the parking lot on 3 sides). Located 30 miles from Sturgis but in a great location for everything.
Sturgis is awesome, we find something different to do every year.

Tks for the info. Is it busy everwhere around Sturgis? was looking for cabins near deadwood. Daytona is not that bad after you get past Main street. Are resturants and bars crowded outside of Sturgis? Just trying to get a feel for the area. Never been out west for any length of time. I guess i'm trying to find a fairly quite area to stay, and still be able to hit all the best places to see. I consider main street and most events, really the only busy place in Daytona. The town's not that bad

Oh I have stayed in the buffalo chip more than once. I dont think I had any sleep for 3 days while I was there. And yes there is some skin in sturgis but it is outlawed in town and police have cracked down hard. So now everything has moved to the outskirts of town IE buffalo Chip, Full Throttle, Etc.
I saw more skin on the beach in Panama city during bike week than I ever have in Sturgis. And in panama city they were 40 years younger :)

We stay in our motorhome at the Buffalo Chip-and it's not bad at all-if you can stand the party atmosphere. It does get noisy but you'll sleep just fine if you've been riding all day long. And believe me you WILL ride enough to enjoy the beautiful state.Go to Rushmore too.The replys here pretty much covered it all-including rally rentals.
Spearfish rd. is a great ride and the canyon too.Lots to see & do and you'll see skin almost everyplace you go(Not like in Daytona but it's all good).
Been there 11 years in a row and I'll be there come this year too.....it starts on My Birthday August 6th:D and Vince will be partying very hard & long:2thumbs:

Ok i am going to slightly Hi-jack this thread for a sec.

I have done 3 Sturgis and taken my own bike (HD Fat) from OZ.
This year i am thinking of going again but with out the HOG and now that i am a Dog owner i was wondering is there anywhere you can rent/hire/borrow a BD or simular?

I know i would not let my nearest and dearest even wash mine so i would not be lending it. That is not what i am asking.

Thoughts????????????

I always end up at the Loud American at night and Full Throttle during the day.
Oh and if i want flesh i'll stay right here and walk 2 blocks and watch young ladies get naked all afternoon and into the night................ i don't have to travel half way around the world for that.
Although it is quicker with the new bridge.

Spearfish is a good place to stay, close to Sturgis, and not as busy. Beautiful country to ride, and if you get a chance head over to Bear Tooth. One of these years I am going to pull the bike south into AZ, and ride across for daytona. Waiting on the kids to be a little older, because they aren't coming, wife maybe! I want to make it a 2 or 3 week ride.. I was in FL with family, 5 or 6 years ago, doing the Disney World and the beaches thing. Great trip! I just missed Biketoberfest by a couple days. I was kicking myself for not thinking of it. I wouldn't of had my bike, but it would have been nice to take a look around

I saw FAR more nudity at the ROT rally campground then I have seen in Sturgis or the Chip.

Elkhorn Ridge RV park and campground in Spearfish is where we always stay.
Its really nice, outdoor pool and 2 hottubs. liquor store onsite, very clean and best of all they have nice log cabins, theres a larger size and a small one. Your also a nice 7 mile ride from downtown Deadwood and 11 miles from downtown Sturgis, Just remember EVERYTHING triples in price during bike week. :2thumbs:

I've been to both Sturgis and Daytona, and IMHO Sturgis wins hands down. The riding alone is some of the best in the country and there is so much going on in Deadwood, Sturgis, a lot of the campgrounds, Sundance, etc....

I think if you go to Sturgis, you won't be disappointed, but I highly doubt you'll be able to do it all in one trip. If you like Daytona, you'll love Sturgis.

I have recently read on another forum that Glencoe camp grounds is or was offering early bird specials. Not sure if they have cabins but I believe that may be close to Sturgis proper.
I have been to Sturgis the last 3 years staying in a house just outside Hill City that a buddy of mine rents. There is plenty to see in the area, both for you and wife and the kids. I think Deadwood area may be pricey but also check Lead that is just outside Deadwood.

If you are taking the kids I don't think you will be too worried about seeing skin. I have only been to Daytona once but i seriously believe it pales in comparison to Sturgis, the area's scenery alone makes it worth the trip, Bubblehead is correct too, don't think you can take it all in in one trip/week.

Google rental cabins, Sturgis or black Hills and start surfing the results

Spearfish KOA Mobile | Campgrounds in SD | KOA Campgrounds

Or if your gonna RV it check here.

We stayed at the Broken Spoke Campground about 7 miles north of town last year.

It was nice but this year is going to be far more about riding than doing the concert scene at the bigger campgrounds. I'll probably spend one day downtown and check out the venders. The rest will be out riding.

The best advice I can give is bring lots of different clothing. Layer up. It's cold in the morning and evening sometimes and during the day you'll bake. Make sure you have rain gear. Small rain showers pass through almost every day there. I learned the hard way. Got fricken soaked to the bone around Rapid City the day of the Big Dog ride. Pulled over three times on the side of the road. Couldn't believe how hard it was raining.

We Stay in a house in Spearfish we get every yr on Rally rental. House we get rents for $2500.00 a week. great log house. 3 bed rooms. split 3 ways = $833.00 per couple. Remember at the Chip RV spots Fenske site $1200.00 per week. We have done the Buffallo Chip thing twice and the Glencove, and Chris's camp ground. I Love the rally but I now do it different. We bring both bikes so we trailer up.Like this yr 2 other couples are coming with us. Stop at Walmart in Spearfish and grocery up for the week then go to the house and check in. In the mornings I make breakfast & coffe while the wife and friends get dressed then make sandwich lunches we pack in our T-bag coolers along with our rain gear. Fuel the bikes up with 100 actaine fuel we bring with us and head off to where ever we are going to go that day. Around noon we find very cool pic-nic spots and have lunch. We have eaten at Badland National park with our legs dangling a hundred feet above the ground. Down in Custer on the Wildlife loop in a wildflower field when about 200 buffallo's grazed to within 100-150' of us. On needles highway at a pic-nic table. Might sound corney but it's very cool, plus we have our beer and were not having to go into a restraunt and pay $14 a head for a burger and be shut down for 45 minutes due to a overloaded kitchen. Then at night we all help out (it's a huge kitchen) we cook steaks on a grill with double stuffed beak potatos's and salids, Chicken spagetti, Shrimp pasta, ect. then clean up and either hang out at the house, or head off into either Deadwood or Sturgis. We usually go to the old Big Al's casino bar in Deadwood. Don't know the name of it now but it's next door to the Big Dipper ice creamery. Either there or to Sturgis to One Eyed Jacks, Knuckles saloon, or Broken Spoke. Full Throttle has gone to commercial due to the TV thing. Just not what it use to be. Or we go out to the Chip for a concert. This is the way we do Sturgis. We usually run 250-300 miles a day riding and that's for 5 days. Plus one yr we tore off to the west for 2 days and went to Yellowstone. Leaving at 6am and arriving back in Spearfish 10pm the next night. It was a tough ride. 900 mile round trip plus add 200 once you enter to when you exit Yellowstone National park.

Stayed at the Chip- Rode all day ? concert every night. Was the the best Va Ca of
my life. Everything went great and the riding is unbeleivable. Put on 1200 miles there.
Would love to get back there someday. Took 32 hours from NY - Did three 10s +
hours a day to get there. You have to go to Sturgis at least once in your life.
