One dude's bike was in such bad shape (89)that he bought a newer (05) bike to get home.
I got a text about next years trip. I don't think I can make it. I'm sure those exact dates won't work. I feel so bad that I'll just have to go solo.

Truth in what you say brother......Picking the right riding partners is crustal. Similar riding style as well as attention to maintenance and preparation.

A few years ago I hooked up with a guy from another site to spend a couple weeks cruising the Blue Ridge. He rode a $50K WCC and he loved the attention it caused, but damn we spent a lot of time on the side of the road w/wiring issues and parts falling off.....then when it was working he wanted to ride w/his hair on fire. I had difficultly with cell reception and at on time I had no way of knowing where he was or how to contact him. We got through it but barely. There was a time I came close to saying "it's been nice but you're on your own".

Age, reason, common courtesy.....I don't know but, riding alone, or finding 2-4 is manageable. I like company. With a fewer number you have a chance of common ground, where to stay, what to eat, or just stopping to smell the roses. Better luck next yr aye?

There more people, the more opinions, ideas, riding habits, etc. you are going to have to deal with. On a long road trip things are going to happen and you just can't avoid them, but I would have little patience for some of that crap.

What bothers me about those kinds of trips is when you have the guy who doesn't compromise. When you have a group like that compromise, and "give and take", are essential to a good ride. When it comes to food, lodging, and routes, everyone has an opinion of what is best, but damn the guy who knows exactly what is the best all of the time.

There is no excuse for running out of gas in a group. When everyone stops and gas is available, you fill up. Its really that simple. Even if I think I can go until the next stop I don't. Its also inexcusable for guys not to service their bike before a long trip like that. Sometimes shit just happen but it seems like a simple service might have prevented half your issues.

Does sound like the trip from hell and for what can be taken from the post, allot seems to be able to have been avoided by simple maintenance and some common curtosy for others.

Normally rather ride alone or with a few people that I know well. Still many times someone will bring someone new and have no issues as long as everything is discussed up front.

Best riding partner is my wife for even if I and her do not agree, she will win out for if it is an overnighter, regardles of where we stay, I will end up sleeping with her and that makes up for it all.

All kidding aside, I have the pleasure of riding with many on this forum, some was for the first time and without excpetion, all times have been great and enjoyable. Not sure what some may feel about my style but I have always had the pleasure to enjoy the road with many from here and hopefully in the future I will again.

I'd say riding with 3 close friends at most makes for a good group...that way you can always pair off 2 + 2 if needed. :yesnod:

Any more than that...too much 'drama', too many agendas, too many opinions = too many headaches! :bang::nonod:

I have gone with a max of 4 others. I knew them very well and I knew the bikes they were riding. Didn't have a problem except for one person didn't drink enough water and ended up with heat exhaustion. I had told him to get hydrated 3 days before we leave, but he did not listen.

I drink one water per beer in the summer riding season, specially on day or longer trips...prevention, prevention, prevention...plus ut here in Utah/Nev/Wyo/Idaho its dry as hell.

Ride fast smart and safe.

I wish I had more money.
You are a wise man Fiber. Your fourth sentence is spot on. My wife is my best riding partner as well. She has taken up riding herself and loves it. I miss having her on the back of my bike to be totally honest. I find it hard to ride with her because I can't relax at all. I am a bundle of nerves until I take the edge off. I hope it gets better. For me at least.

Wow, that would have been such a shitty trip! Are these guys experienced riders????
As Fiber said... expierence has nothing to do with it.

I ride with all kinds of guys on all kinds and brands of bikes. It always comes down to guys not prepairing themselves, their bikes, their gear, etc.

It changes the dynamic of the ride that is for sure.

I typically only do long rides with a few guys at the most.

Yep, for multiple day rides I have 2 good friends I ride with. We all know it's critical to prep the bikes before each ride & (knock on wood) we haven't had any personality conflicts in 10+ years riding together!! LESSON: Know the guys you are riding with & know your responsibilty to be a good riding partner!!!
