Here is something that has never happened to me i went to get gas yesterday tried to get the gas cap off and no luck it just spun wouldn't tighten or loosen. Got it back to the garage and had to use a screwdriver to break it seems after i got the chrome cover off that the screw inside had come loose, something i had never thought about checking before, Drove to JP cycles today picked up a new paint protector and flush mount Gas cap all is good

There is a steel dowel pin between the threads and the cap that is suppose to stop the top from spinning. If yours isn't still there it's in the tank.

Here is a real quick hand drawing from memory, showing the small piece of steel rod that locks the gas cap and thread portion.

I believe he has posted pix of his air brushing abilities in the past....

tight fit?

When I got my bike out this spring I went to get gas and the cap was WAY tight. I checked it out later and couldn't find anything that looked out of place. I figured a little lube on it would cure the problem - helped but didn't resolve the problem. Well it kept getting tighter through the summer and I recently had to Dremel the plastic threaded part to make it possible to thread into the tank. This is an 03 model with 11,000 miles and is stored in my dry heated/cooled basement. I try to keep plenty of fuel in the tank. I guess the plastic absorbs enough gas & gas fumes to swell over time? Anyone else ever had this happen?

Yes. That was one of the reason I made my own cap (which I have for sale in the swap meet section). The stock cap gets is hard to turn and allows for little grip pressure.

Happened on my 06 K9. Got to where it was almost impossible to get off. Bought one from lowdownchopshop. Spins on and off easy.

Yeah, my cap had the same problem with swelling or something so I just took an exacto knife to the threads and shaved them back a bit. Now it turns on and off like it was greased.

yeah, so i have the same issue with my left gas cap. I tried a pair of large channel lock pliers and scratched the f-ing tank! how did you use the screwdriver to get it off? thanks.

Mr. Wright

Knows some things
When all else fails, drill a 3/8 hole in the center of the cap, then you can get the center out with a pair of plyers
