Streetable cam?

Hey folks,

Got my 03 Chopper in the shop for some routine maintenance. I have the V&H 2 into 2 pipes, carb rejetted, compression releases, Dyna 2K ignition, and he WP upgrade already. The bike runs fine but I'm sure there's more power to be had. The shop I go to has done me right in the past and I trust their work, but I want to make sure the cam they are installing will be street worthy (not strip) and won't cause me problems down the road.

The cam is a .657 and the guys tell me it'll pull up the HP and torque numbers and no other mods are needed. Does that sound right?

Thanks and have a good weekend!

I too am curious to the answer to this. The shop that just worked on mine said the 107 would actually start easier with a bigger cam. Evidently the 107 has a smallish cam. Wondering what would be a good upgrade.

With a 650+ your gonna have to do more work then just drop in a cam. I hope they are milling the heads to get the compression higher and putting in new stronger springs.

Guys on here have 650's and love them on the street, all depends on how you ride her and what you want. 650 is going to do its work on the high end of the RPM scale.

I went back and asked if there was any machining, springs to be changed, or other changes and was told the 107's were already set up to take a cam that size...now I'm starting to worry...

Question- why would anyone want more top end on a chopper?
Personally these things get a bit squirrely once you get above 70mph.
Plus they vibrate like a mother once you get above 4000 rpm.
I'd rather have more low to mid-range grunt. ??

Need more compression, springs, machine work, timming adjustment, some carb tunning just to make it run like it should. That is alot of cam for the street and the engine will use alot of fuel as well.

That's bullshit - Just dumping in a 650+ cam your engine won't last long. :job: - Honestly if they have put this in I would tell them to put your stock cam back in, or change out to a 585 to eer on the safe side.

Some guys that know a hell of a lot more than me I'm sure will chime in but the stock springs on your 107 are NOT built for the kind of lift from a 650 cam. If I'm not mistaken there was 2 different spring sets in a 107 one is able to handle up to a 600 and the other 585, but don't think its over 600  Don't take my word on it though, I'll check my S&S manual when I get home if nobody beats me to it.

I agree with Bobby too you will be using a heck of a lot more fuel with that cam than what you have now.

Id want to know what's in my bd 107 before tearing in. Not sure if its a true s&s.

Who makes that cam? They probably state a compression range it needs.

If its set right it sounds like a blast.

Also its not just top end. It's above 2600 rpm in every gear. Can be downright thrilling!

I think it goes pretty much without saying that from 04 and up that an engine straight from S&S is not what is in our dogs, BD made mods for EPA etc. Since they would get S&S to send the parts and engines were assembled at the BD plant. Thats why in the manual it says 04's came equipped with either a 526, 585, or 600. Haven't cracked mine open yet to see what they gave me, but I think by the sounds of it I drew the short straw and have the smallest cam.

Maybe for an 03 the engine came preassembled? But im not sure

Marv would you not agree that the compression would need to be increased however for that cam?

You can also call S&S and give them the number off of the engine. they should be able to tell you if it was complete or not and if it was acomplete S&S engine what is in it.

I would think more work is needed to get the most out of a .657. Like Marv said I'd want to know what's in there first.

If that's cam is a red shift / zippers then it's for a twin cam.

If that's the case then it ain't gonna fit. :D

Neil (nomad2day?) has the redshift 656 and might be the strongest build here.

So much for the guys that know a lot...haven't heard squat out of them...it is a .656 and I do remember 'red' being in the conversation...oh well, guess I'll deal with it :choppersmiley:

Holy Molly, I would not let them guys change my spark plugs or even touch or adjust my Mirrors.

They are full of shit as a constipated elephant. I run a Woods 650 on a 117 and had my head worked over, installed larger valves, springs and decked the heads 0.030, used .010 base gaskets and 0.030 head gaskets, which bumped the compression to 10.5 to 1, use the adjustable thunder heart ignition set on position E and XXX TAZ Carb which has two thunder jets, and on and on. I can feel the difference, it does fly, kick ass and use lots of fucking gas too :D but it wasn't the cam alone that gave me the power. Good Luck
