Strange Sound

Ok, so last weekend I change the oil, primary fluid, transmission fluid, adjusted primary a hair.
Went for a ride -- all is good.
The following day, I drive (w/bike) to a harley dealer and buy a new battery
I come home and install the new battery.

Now when I ride I get a high pitch beep/squeal occansionally.
More often than not it's when I pull the clutch in and the bike is in first - doesn't always do it and does it at other times as well just not as much.

The noise sounds electronic to me -- like a warning beeper in a car.

I checked the connections to the battery and nothing is loose.

Could I have gotten the primary too tight?

Ewverything is running good on the bike.

By the way I have a wires plus unit and bike is fuel injected.

I know one of you guys must know the answer to this!

Thanks
Mike

well, from your description, the only thing you did mechanical was to adjust the primary so i would say to put it back where it was and see if the noise goes away. you should be able to do that through the inspection plate (if you have small fingers). don't think the battery would have anything to do with it.

that's what I was thinking but the noise sounds so electronic not mechanical.
And the adjustment to the primary was less than 1/8"
If I don't get any other thoughts that's what I'll was going to do. Also going to pull the battery out and double check all the wiring in that area.

The only electronic audible noise I'm aware of is the horn. You may want to check and make sure it's working properly, but don't see how that would randomly go off. Back off the primary chain one notch and see if the noise goes away.

Yea, I was going to say it might be that rinky dink horn also:lol: but try backing off the primary chain to where it was and see if your problem goes away. If not you may need to lube the clutch actuator rod that goes throught the transmission. Mine started squeaking shortly after I got my bike and would as you say only do it when I pulled in the clutch.

You could also adjust the clutch cable and while your at it check to see if the clutch rod has lube on it..

Duh should pay closer attention to previous posts....:bang:

How does one lube the clutch activator? Just in case.
just like when you adjust the clutch, but when you loosen the nut behind that cover with the dimples in it behind the pipes where you have to have the allen wrench inserted, use the allen wrench to completely back out that rod from the threads and pull it all the way out. that is the activator rod . use a good grease and smear it up from one end to the other (not too much because when you put it back in, it will just be scraped off). make sure you put some on the tapered end also, that pushes against the throw out bearing. make sure you push it all the way in before you try to adjust the clutch when you are through. :2thumbs::cheers:

I had a noise that fits your description - ended up being a bad throwout bearing.

Keep us posted.

Since you changed primary oil, it is possible for the throwout bearing to act up. Did you add enough oil and was it priamry fluid of the same weight that was in there??

just a thought but one day out of nowhere a kind of buzzing electric noise started on my bike turns out it was the front brake pads buzzing from the hole in the rotor. hope this helps

Ok, I think the noise is gone. I did re-adjust the chain to where it was as best as I can tell but I don't think that was it.

I am embarassed to say what I think was the real cause.
When I went to adjust the chain I decided to change the primary oil again (in case I had to remove the cover to adjust the chain)
When I drained the primary, I only got about 20oz out instead of the 32 that I thought had been put in.
Last week when doing this I had a leak when I didn't have the drain plug in tight and I must have lost way more oil then I realized and when I looked at the level last week it looked ok, but I noticed today that where I had the bike jacked up last week was no where near level front to back or left to right and I think it looks like I did not add enough fluid.

Either way looks like the problem is solved -- thanks for all the input.

Was it hot when you drained it? Also the front of the primary hold a little oil, you have you pull the cover to get it all out! Glad you got it fixed!:2thumbs:

nope, will NOT all drain out the plug. need to get some extra o-ring/gaskets before you do the primary.
