Strange problem

Help please, 2003 chopper fires up fine and runs from Idle to about 2k rpm then cuts out when revved. Drop back to idle and it runs fine.

I pulled the carb bowl and checked for debris and it was clean and pulled the air cleaner to watch fuel flow when I hit the gas and there seems to be plenty of fuel shooting into the motor just no ignition to burn it. I'll check fuel flow from the tank/petcock just to be sure.

I just got a new isp and haven't been hear for a while and the set up has changed a bit so I thought I would post hear as well to get any input I can.

change the plugs?

arching at plug wires?

loose connection on ign wires at coil?

just thinking out loud.

I wonder if the primary jet could have trash in it??? I believe the switch from intermediate to primary is not until 2750 RPMs though. Just a thought. I would say it has to be fuel related though. :loony:

Does it stutter or does it die above 2K?

I think MARV is on the right track. Recommend puting an in-line tester on one of the plug wires or in the signal line to the coil to see if the spark is active above 2K -- sounds like ya got fuel!

It stutters at slightly above 2k sounding almost like an old motor boat. I did notice that when I had the air cleaner off and was watching for flow that short blips would have normal rev results and normal accelerator pump function while hard throttle would get the cutting out and sustained hard throttle for a few seconds would get a sucking sound like the enricher had been pulled maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 way out.

maybe you got some shit clogged in the main jet?

and the sucking sound at full throttle is air filling?

Yep, I would definately check the primary jet. Unfortunately it is the harder of the 2 to check if I remember correctly.:job:

Have you pulled the petcock to check the screen?

Do anything else to the bike?

Check the ignition switch itself?

Does it do it just sittin and revvin or only on the road?

Did you clean the jets when you dropped the bowl?

Did you make sure the o-ring for the nozzle went back on the top of the nozzle when you put the bowl back on?

Did you check the accel pump diaphram for any debris or tears?

Lastly, have you tried to adjust the carb properly?

Sounds to me like you need to adjust the accel pump on your carb. If you have never adjusted a carb before, do a search on carb adjustment. Try to set your carb to the start up settings.

On the accel pump which is on the top right side of the carb turn it in all the way (right or clock wise) and back it out one full turn to get started, from there keep turning out 1/4 at a time see if that gets better, if it get worse turn it in 1/8 turn at time until you are able to accel. If that does'nt help you may have other issses as mentioned above by Gas Man. Take your time and be patient when adjusting the carb.

Carlos

OK a guy told me that some of these coils have a low rpm and a high rpm circuit and that it's not normal for half to go out it could happen. He said go old school diagnostic on it. Just hook up my old Sun timing light and see how it reacts. Well I got a normal strobe at idle and low rpm with slower strobe at the point where it begins to miss and it almost stops blinking altogether at high rpms when it's cutting out. If it's not something in the EHC sending a bad signal then I'll go with the coil for now, at least it's cheaper!

Out of curiousity, with a "high and low" RPM circuit on the coil how many wires run to your coil?

And do you know for sure that your cam sensor is in good shape?

I don't know if the cam sensor is good for certain. How would I know when it fires up fine and idles normally? Would it act normal at low rpm then send a bad signal above 2K? How would I check to see if it's good?

Sparks... I think you can check your power at the coil. Check the coil and sensor with olhms. But I don't know the values. Might want to PM nighttrain for that info. I have a spare coil we can make some arranges for if needed.

I pulled the cam sensor out and cleaned it but it appears to be opposing magnets that pick up the rotation of a notched steel rotor, I have no clue on how to test the ohms on this thing without complete removal. I hate new electronic stuff, give me good old fashion points under the cam nose cone "points cover" any day.

Before I say any more about the cam sensor or ignition module I just reread your last posts about no spark...

You've checked the repair that was done to the coil wire, right? And I assume that after it was fixed it the bike ran good?

Then how did its latest problem start? Was it gradual or did it happen all at once? Was it running fine then the stumbling just started? Or did you shut it off and it acted like that the next time you decided to go for ride?

And lastly, are you sure the gas in your tank is any good?

Dennis

PS When you say your timing light "almost stops blinking" do you mean it's on all the time or off?
