sticking shifter and loud downshifts help

2008 mutt
All stock mechanically other than 585 cam jets and exhaust baffle.
Ok here is the deal, when up shifting the toe shifter gets stuck up. it will come back down delayed by itself when you give it throttle or manually bump it with your foot.
Also when down shifting like when coming to a stop. pull clutch kick shifter down 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st. the shifter will some times stick and when the trans goes down a gear it make a hard solid clunk.
I lubed the heim joints, no improvement.
I removed the rear heim from the shifter arm that is splined right onto the trans. I will still stick when up-shifting.
I did put 400 miles on over the weekend and got stuck in lots of rain.
What should I check next?
clutch adjustment or shift forks?
Any help would be appreciated.

also wanted to add that the clutch feels fine, I don't notice any slipping or creeping.

Fixed.

Took of top cover. Paw adjustment was fine.
The paw on the ramp part that is suppose to ride back over the nipples on the drum had a rough spot. The nipples on the drum look fine.
The rough spot looked like it was from when the part was stamped.
Smoothed it out and no more sticking shifter.

I have to ride it yet. I'm pretty sure it won't effect the solid clunk when downshifting.
It definity fixed the sticking when up shifting.
Just wanted to post the results if others have a similar problem.

If you ride it and the problem is still there, check the trans drive pulley. I had the same problem and the nut had backed off (08 K-9). It had just started to eat the side of the belt (would let it ride out against the cover).

I've seen it happen twice (both 08's). I quit running the belts as tight as the book calls for (no problems since).
