Starting Mastiff Through The Winter When Stored In A Heated Garage?

Energy One
I am storing my 05 Mastiff in a heated garage through the winter in northern Illinois. The garage stays about 40 to 50 degress most of the time. Is it better for the motor to be started a few times a month and let it get up to operating temp? Or is it better on the motor to just let it sit for 3 to 4 months with out starting it?

I'm sure that there is other thoughts on this. I don't start my bike threw the winter. I think you will surely cause some moisture if not on warm up but also on cool down. I would just put it on a battery tender and leave alone. Also post an intro before they start busting your balls.

I'm in Northern Illinois too, only 30 miles from the Wisconsin line. I had a Harley Lowrider many years ago that I would go out into my cold, unheated garage every couple days, start and run for 3-5 minutes, then shut it off. My "idea" was to keep the battery charged, as I couldn't afford a charger and it was before "SmartTender" days (hey, I was young, stupid and broke...now I'm not young or broke anymore..:willy_nilly::zzdisappointed: ).

Anyway, long story short - I scored the cylinders and did more damage than good by doing this to the bike.:nono: The service tech, after fixing my bike, said the oil would drain down from the cylinder walls and not have an opportunity to lubricate evenly, thus eventually causing the scoring of the walls. He also said one should never start a bike that hasn't been run in awhile without riding it for 20 miles to get all the moisture out of the oil. While his advice seemed a little extreme, I abide..just to be safe.

I put Seafoam in my oil & gas, rode about 10 miles to make sure everything circulated then shut it off, leaving gas in the carb as Big Dog suggests to keep carb gaskets from drying out. And that's it until my first (20 mile) ride in the Spring.:moped: The Dog's now on a lift with a battery tender on it and a space heater nearby to keep the air temp above freezing.

Probably more info than you wanted, but that's my :zz2cents:..

Cee...let her sleep the sleep of the Michiganders till spring. :D

I put the wife's HD down this weekend with an oil change and STABL in the tank. I won't fire it back up unless she's gonna be gone for at least an hour.

The Dog stays "combat ready" all winter. Always on a tender and ridden at least every four days (gotta love that heated vest..)

Pretty much what road king said...

Mine goes away as it did this week. Won't come out till I'm ready to open the season in the spring.

B.D. MASTIFF 05, out of Respect to the Forum Members, the first post should always be an Intro, in the introduction thread of course.

Question Answer: Pull it out every few weeks and ride it for a half hour somewhere.
