How do I open up the motor on an 04 starter? Do the 3 large Phillips head screws have anything to do with it? Solenoid bumps the shaft out but no spinning of the shaft.
Thanks

Yours may be different but I just did this on my K-9
First disconnect your battery then.....
1. remove exhaust.
2. remove clutch cable cover
3. remove side cover on clutch cable side.
4. remove belt.
5. remove wires from starter
6. remove bolts holding on starter at back of primary I think 3
while I had the side cover off I also went over my wiring and covered any worn places. Removed the EHC plugs and put a new coating of dielectric grease.
Any alt/starter shop should be able to go through your starter. Mine cost about $120
Link is not workingThere is a thread on this in how to: http://How To: Clean Solenoid Contacts on the starter
The two big bolts hold the case together, but remember to index the case first before disassembling it .Also watch for small bushing washers on the armature shaft! Requires min.skill.
Cleaned all that shit already! Need in to the motor windings / brushes.Sorry- go to forums at the top of this page and under technical go to How TO: and you will find this link. Don't know why it's not working!
Yes, I was able to get in to it and it was just the way I thought with the 2 bolts. It was a beast to get apart tho...Hey GDog
Did you ever dig into your starter and, if so, can you share your experience?
Thanks,
dingo
Thanks, Marc, think I'm gonna end up doing the same for my 05 Chop.mine took a dump on me and it was the bearings that had rusted. I took it out and then to a local starter shop. They replaced the bearings and brushes for $50 with next day service. Works great!
