starter

Has anyone seen this?
Installing a rivera brute 4 extreme on my 02 pit and discovered the starter is not retracting all the way. After looking further at old ring gear, i realized this had been a problem for a while since the backside of the ringgear teeth were half worn away. I bought the bike used about 3 yrs ago so i am not sure if it is a stock starter or if someone had thier fingers in it or what. starter is chrome/polished if that helps. I also took drive side of starter and sol. plunger side apart, everything looks normal and appears to be assembled in the right order with the right parts. With starter on the bench you can push back, [retract], on the dirve about 3/16 in.

Thanks in advance, Jim

You can over tighten the jackshaft gear and make it kinda sticky or get is cocked abit. BD ran Spyke starters back then. The shorter motored ones. Is it working with your new belt drive?

Coolbreeze,
I dont believe it ha anything to do with the jackshaft or over tightening because it was already sticking out too far to begin with, and with the starter removed entirely from the bike it does the same thing. If i dont fix the problem it will ruin the new ring gear and who knows what else.
It looks on the outside like a unit from a co. called powerhouse. Saw the pic of it in dennis kirk catalog pg. 871, pt#20-1900.
Sent pix of mine to tech @ spyke, waiting for a reply.
Thanx 4 the input,
Jim
