Pulled the pirmary cover and found the shaft sheard apart. Now should i consider a rebuilt or new starter. Does the started come thriugh the top after the battery tray is removed or out the right side, removing the mufflers

Replacement starters are re-built from BDM. I don't see any reason they aren't just as good. You can have yours rebuilt locally if you think it needs it.

Starter will come out the side after removing the side panel and over the belt and the exhaust if you have too. Two bolts and disconnect the wires.

Hope your not down too long.

It is like Raywood said. Pull it out from the brake pedal side 2 bolts mount it and the wires. A new starter is about $450, rebuilt off of ebay from Shovelheadkicker $100 or you can have it checked out and replace the jack-shaft it is the only thing broke. I bought and rebuilt one and run it and BDM replaced the broke on under warranty then with another rebuilt one.

been through that recently too GA, I went to a local alternator and starter shop and bought a jack shaft for my starter for $10 bucks, had it installed in the starter for another $30. I had to remove my exhaust, and loosen my battery cage a little to get room to pull it out. Not a hard repair. Good luck

You can remove it from Left or Right side. I started removing all starters from Left hand side (primary side) if I had question about the internals of the primary. If you or anyone else have never had the primary apart it may be a good idea to take a look inside. This way you can inspect and make sure the nuts for the front sprocket and clutch hub are not loose. Yours may need the updated clutch hub shim as well, your year bike most likely needs one. Once in there, remove the O-ring that is on the Main shaft and throw it in the garbage (do not replace) You will also be able to inspect your transmission bearings with everything apart. Grab hold of the Main shaft and move it up and down, see if it has any play in it. If it has any play at all, side to side, up and down, it will need new transmission bearings.
If someone has already been inside the primary, it will be more cost effective to remove from the Right hand side (pulley side)
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
Good luck:up:
