Starter tearing up the Starter Ring Gear

Starter on my 07 K9 is tearing up the Starter Ring Gear and finding some shavings in the primary. The starter makes a load clunk once in awhile, its not all the time. I've put about 1,500 miles on it as it's just off and on. However after noticing the shavings have become a bit more concerned.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Things to check;
- play in the shaft that holds the pinion gear
- alignment of the pinion and the starter ring gear (while the outer primary case is off)
- starter body alignment to the primary housing (a loose starter mounting bolt can cause this)

Thanks guys...I haven't opened it up to take a look yet. Bought a house a few months ago and lift hasn't made its way to the new house yet. Hopefully finish my garage next weekend and get settled with all my tools.

I noticed my Pit had some wear on the ring so I took it off and flipped it around. Nearly new surface for the starter gear now. Just my poor ass fix.....and 2¢.

Yea - Well I was previously renting and I still have the garage and could only find someone to rent the apt and didn't want the garage. So since I'm still paying for the garage the tools were last.
