Ok got starter back and on and WOW. now its like it has no compression. this thing cranks over FAST. even hot. SO much more comfortable hearing it crank over easy and fast. have the starter gone through did the trick!!!
Good Deal! :2thumbs:

outlawcrewcab,

Great to hear that you are up and running again. Also good to hear that there is still some old timers starter and alternators shops that can get these up and running again for a reasonable price.

Something all of us should keep in mind, if we have a starter that takes a crap and out of warranty. There is a good chance that the local starter and alternator shops can get them going and save hundreds of dollars.

Sounds like this one is a wrap... But on my other bike, sometimes I do experience a kind of "vapor lock" symtom, most likely to happen when hot after a short stop.

Put the bike in gear, walk it backwards, kind of gives the piston a "running start" when you do fire for effect. Don't always work, but makes me feel better for trying to help it along.

good to hear man, I know what you mean about the hole in the wall place that does great work. I had to have a starter for 25 year old briggs & stratton motor rebuilt and works like a charm now.

thanks Fiber. yea its a little hole in the wall place and they guy who rebuilt it made george burns look young
Respect to those old timers. That's plain and simple. I love to listen to what they have to say and they usually still know what's going on when it comes to things like this that just haven't changed!

well damn thing is back to doing it again. i took back of starter off and looked at contacts and they look ok took sand paper and cleaned then anyways but still dont want to start . its SO strange will not crank over and over again then will spin and if i let off to soon when it does turn over i can hit the button again and it will crank right over. It SO acts like its vapor locking. it only does it when its hot. when its been sitting over night fires right up hot even with charger on it dont want to start . this is starting to really piss me off

Check your ignition timing as well. It may be too far advanced.
If it does it when it's HOT - CHECK THE TIMING!!! - Start by eliminating the basics. If your bike is an ignition points/condensor and not an electronic points replacement system you will also want to check the points rub block for excessive wear from no cam lube. It will affect the points dwell angle and timing. A failing condenser will cause the point contacts to burn out and cause weak spark. If it is a pointless module then have the timing checked as well.

yea but my problem is that it dont turn over like the starter is weak. i have noticed like monday when i went to start it in the AM after being on the charger all night it wouldnt kick over i put it in gear and pushed and left off clutch to turn it over a little then it fired right up. last time i couldnt get it started i pulled one plug out and it turned over then i put plug back in and it fired right up

You mentioned that it acts like it vapor locks and won't completely crank over. If the timing is too far advanced then the early firing of the plug too far BTDC will fight the piston back down on the compression stroke and act like a weak starter. CHECK THE IGNITION TIMING. It may have changed enough to begin causing your problem along with a weak starter on your 2002. Go advance the timing on your car and see what happens.

that could also explain the comments i get all the time. it pops alot on decel. some people say they love it others say it sounds like a alch. bike

well took the bike to the stealer and they laughed when i told them what it was doing and i wanted to have the timing checked. said its all elc. on that bike no adjusting.. now im lost

outlawcrewcab,
Any luck getting this fixed? I have the exact problem with my 2001 Mastiff. I've went through three batteries so far and have pulled my starter twice dressing the solenoid contacts once and replacing them the second time. One thing you want to be careful with is not over-torquing the battery cable where it connects to the solenoid. Doing so will twist the contact inside and the solenoid plunger won't make good contact when it kicks in. I have a love-hate relationship with my Mastiff and right now it's mostly hate as it's sitting in my garage w/ another fried 330cca battery.

edit: my local big dog dealer recommended I try a slam button. that's next on the list.
