starter? relife valve?

ok in other post i have said how my bike dont want to start at times. well again today i ride down town with the wife for lunch and it pulls the no start crap. so we go off and let it cool for a hr come back still nothing. starter cranks about 1/2 turn then locks up. i call my dad he comes out and trys to jump it with my moms car and still same thing so we ride back with him and get truck and trailer. We go back and try to jump one more time with same results so i take a wrench as last hope and lossen the rear plug about 2 full turns try again and it fires up and turns over GREAT. im so lost. so should i spend the dough on relive valves? or look for a bigger starter? i had this problem 2nd day i bought it and had dealer put new battery in. i even weent back 2 weeks later after it did it again and had them put biggest battery they had in it. it dont sit long time maybe 2 days most battery always says full by my batter tester at 13.1 volts. this is pissing me off nothing like standing around looking dumb with people walking by saying nice bike

compression reliefs will help a lot on these big inch motors. are you keeping it on a battery tender? if not you really need to do that.

Not sure if jumping your motorcycle with a car battery is a good thing. I wouldn't do that again unless you have deep pockets.

:hi: it's usually ok as long as the jumper vehicle is NOT running. DO NOT START the jumper vehicle. just jump off of the battery.:2thumbs:

My bike was doing the same thing it would turn over then nothing. The guy at the local shop showed me a button to push on the starter that would start it. It is on the right side of the starter just wonderin if you tried that.

it turns over a little. it acts just like a hydro lock. it turns over a little then stops and when you let off button it kicks back. like the starter cant get pass the compression. but like today onmce it gets pass the first hump it turns over fine. some times it will do it 2 or three times then fire right up. other times it just does not want to start at all

dont know if your bike has a compression release,if it does i just out of habit always push mine in ,also was at the dealer the other day and they also suggested bump the starter before fully starting to get off the compression stroke,

ok so i pull the starter today al wires look good and clean and where tight. i took starter to a local plae that rebuilds starts and alt. he tested it and tore it down told me start looks fine. the cylinode contacts where burned and damaged and said they needed to be replace. he thinks that will solve my problems. should have it back in the AM and i will put it back together and find out:bang:

mine does the same since i pulled out a compression release and capped it with a spark plug. i broke the release fucking with it hence the plug still in. I dont use a tender and it always starts. when it hits that comp stroke it holds up a bit but pushes thru then starts.

i'd say check your ground to the starter/frame. could even be a bad crimp on the ground wire. some solder that clamp to guarantee a solid connection.

its a cheap easy start for you.
Sul, thats how my bike starts almost EVERY time. It has the slight hesitation and then goes. I start to think my starter is about to fry. Been thinking about getting a new starter, been looking on Ebay for compression releases, etc. As long as my batter is charged it cranks up - but never fires up immediately. Its actaully kinda good to hear that somewhat normal.

But I don't think the 2002's have compression releases do they?

Could also get some of those spark plug comp releases...

Might not be a bdad idea even if it was the starter..

i sure hopes this fixes i LOVE the bike but starting to really piss me off leaving me stranded once a week like this. almost make me want a sport bike again. hell i tryed push starting it once with no luck got going as fast as i could going down drive way let out clutch and rear tire just slid uggg... man i hope this fixes it

Good point Gaz!!!!:2thumbs:

yea i seached releases and found the spark plug ones and read on many sites of people having them melt so i would rather use the real deal i just hate the idea of yanking the heads

Ok got starter back and on and WOW. now its like it has no compression. this thing cranks over FAST. even hot. SO much more comfortable hearing it crank over easy and fast. have the starter gone through did the trick!!!
