StarteR question

So I purchased a one owner 05 mastiff decided to do some preventative maintenance on the starter . I pulled the starter to clean contacts and check for oil inside . I noticed it was really clean inside the solenoid no oil and looks really good. I also noticed the starter had a sticker on the outside . "BDM recon part" is this a recall replacement starter ?

don't remember a recall on starters but i suppose it could have been replaced because the original went bad.

nothing wrong with reman. if they are done right. sometimes they even last better.

Its not likely you will ever see oil inside the solenoid. The oil gets inside the starter motor housing and the starter gear housing. The case mod has not been done to help prevent oil intrusion so you might want to consider opening the rest of the starter and checking it.

Ok I'll open it up further I thought oil went down into the solenoid . It worked great never an issue and I was going to cut the notch out for oil to drain back into the chaincase . Just wondering if this could be the original starter just curious

I've worked on one or two bikes where dealers replaced the starter with a recon, without letting the customer know.

It was done as warranty work

Raywood do you know what would be different on this starter as a warranty replacement ?
I believe they just cleaned up the contacts on them and sent them back out after testing. Here is a sheet that came with one of my 9 after I broke one in half.
