Starter question

I took my starter out yesterday to clean the soleniod.

My bikes soleniod was clicking ever time I pressed the start button ...and not starting...?

FYI ..The battery was teasted and is good...All electric connections tight...and aIso have a wire plus system on bike. The bike was running great just monents before.

Im wondering if my starter is fried ???

My question is ....I used jumper cables from a good battery and connected them to the starter postes / leads..... shouldn't the starter start spinning ?
I didn't even here the soleniod click..it was D.O.A. Is this normal?...

Good ground to the starter and positive cable to the lead that goes into the starter motor should make her spin. Good ground to the starter and positive lead to the soleniod input/battery side, the 12 volts to the green wire connector on the side of the soleniod should make her spin unless the soleniod is fried.

Bad solenoid!!! get a push button on the next solenoid, problem solved. The clicking you are hearing may be the compression releases

Pull the green wire and run a test wire from the positive to the green wire connector at tthe starter. Key on first.

Pitbull 43...Or any other forum memeber....please chime in on this question.

I like the idea of installing the push button cover for the solenoid...It sounds like a great back up way of starting your bike if your solenoid fails...

But what is the correct way to use it? Is there any procedure before you press that plunger button?
I read on a older post that a guy had that button stick and the starter kept spinning.

Guys after reading your posts....
I just tested the solenoid and the starter ....they are both GOOD and in working order...WTF...???

I'm guessing that the solenoid had a burnt spot on her and she won't work???
I'm going to clean the solenoid as others posted and purchase that plunger button cover.

Any thoughts / ideas why she won't kick over and start would be welcome ...and thanks again!

Have the same prob. Will work then won't . Push button on order from spike. Clicking noise should be your compression release if you have them. I have hole drilled in mine till the oh shit button gets here. To start all you have to do is turn on key hit the hold the start button and push at same time. When she fires let go of both.

Any More ideas???

I drilled a hole in solenoid cover so I could manually push in the solenoid....I pressed in the solenoid with a screw driver and the bike still won't start.

I cleaned the internals of the solenoid....And it's clicks in and out when I press the start button...bike won't start...click...click...click

I bought a new relay.

I bought a new battery circuit breaker

The solenoid is getting 12.87 volts from the green power wire??

The starter worked when I bench tested her...any other Ideas??? I have a new starter on the way..via mail

Check you connections at the battery, at the starter soleniod, soleniod to the starter motor. check for loosness and check the crimp. Also check the battery ground where it bolts to the starter. From here I would check the starter brushes and winding for oil and wear.

Yesterday I just put in a brand new braille battery....????
Jake mentioned that it might be my voltage regulator...I'm going to check it.
I also have a new starter on its way to me...any other thoughts?

What he said... Make sure you are first pushing the run button. then hold down the start button at the same time you push in on the solenoid. I am sure that is your problem. I was going to take my starter off and replace that and the solenoid but with the 4" Karata it would be too much of a hassle. Just lean over and push it for me now. Had to remove part of the belt guard but thats ok too.

Are they going down to that when you have the start button pushed as well? If the compression releases arent clicking then that will kill a new battery in no time at all

A bolt backed out of the clutch basket in my primary and jammed the into the casing and wouldn't allow my engine to turn over....
The starter wasn't burnt out...My battery wasn't bad.....the shop that did the repair said that the factory must not have put lock-lite on the bolts when it was assembled.
