Starter problem

Need some info please. I have a 03 Bulldog that was having starter problems. I believe it was the original starter. Got a new one from BDPP figuring I will keep the old one for rebuild if and when this goes. Anyway I replaced the starter and now the jackshaft bolt won't tighten up. I'm holding the gear to keep it from spinning. I checked old threads and found one that had the same problem. The member mentions a coupling ring that falls out and needs to be reinstalled facing the right way. That member hasn't been on for over a year. Does anyone know what I'm looking for? Pictures? I'm going to pull the starter back out either this afternoon or tomorrow (oh boy!) Thanks.

What Do You Mean By "Won't tighten Up"
is The Bolt Spinning Freely?
it Sounds Like Maybe The Starter You Had Was A 10-32 Jack Shaft Bolt And The New Starter Is A 1/4-20.
The Bolt Is Interchangeable Just Need The Right Size Threads.

The bolt threads in. you pull on it and it won't come out. It won't tighten down, there is resistance when you turn the bolt but it never stops. Feels like its stripped but threads look ok on the bolt. I tightened it up as much as possible and even hit the start button. The bolt just popped back out. Have you heard of this coupling ring? Should I take the starter out and look for something that may have fell under it or leave in and order different bolt?

Figured it out. Started looking around under the starter, and saw what looked like a 1/2" deep socket laying on the frame of the bike. Turns out to be the coupler for the jackshaft to starter. Without this installed I was holding the jackshaft from moving but the starter was moving with the bolt so wouldn't tighten. Had to pull the bolts and move the starter out to install. Works great. Now I just have to put everything back together. To get the starter out I had to move the drive belt and one oil line. So i had to drain the oil tank. Thanks for the help guys.
