Hello fellas, since I've had my 08' k9 I've had an oil leak around the starter area. Just recently I had to replace my starter solenoid and I went ahead and purchased the seal kit for inner and outer primary which included the seal or seals for the starter. When I pulled the starter I discovered the starter had NO seal which was an, im guessing 3 inch diameter oring seal figured well thats where my leak is coming from so put that in put everything back together but still leaking in same area, not as bad but still leaking. I noticed in the kit I have another oring gasket that's a bit large in diameter did I miss one?

Hey Shawn,
This came out of an 07 K9. It's the only seal I'm aware of. There is a procedure to do to starters to help the oil get back in the primary. I purchased my replacement starter with one from Wildsteedworx.com . It came with a channel for the oil to escape back into the primary. Since you have the starter in hand it's a good time to do it. I'm sure if you search around you can get instructions from someone or better yet a picture.

Knows some things
HDM now has a billet nose cone for the starter, to eliminate the leaking problem. Also make sure you don't have to much oil in the primary. 18oz if you just drain and refill it or 20oz, if you pull the whole cover and clean the inside.

Yeah thats the seal that was missing, I put a new one in thought I had it licked but its still leaking a little. Guy posted to only put 18- 20 oz oil in primary which it calls for a quart. Maybe it just has to much in it cause I put a quart in it. If that's the case it should stop leaking soon lol!

I'm wondering if I can find an oring thats the same diameter but just a tad thicker to tighten up the seal I may pull the starter back out and run to the auto part store and see if I can find one.

I'm not sure that will help it's a pretty tight fit . It is possible you damaged it when you replaced it. Did you have the inner primary off? If not it could one of the other seals that's leaking. Possibly the trans seal it's very close #38. Using less fluid is recommended to help keep fluid from contaminating the starter but not absolutely necessary. Your primary should not leak regardless of the extra fluid.

The primary was not off when I put the starter seal in and I was very careful putting it in. Just had trans rebuilt and have checked trans fluid everytime I ride and it's holding solid no leaks. Trans fluid has that distinct funk to it, this is oil from primary im sure of that.

The seal is between the trans and the primary. It seals primary fluid from leaking not trans fluid. My guess is when they did the trans they either did not replace the seal or damaged it. How long after they did the trans did you notice the leak? I've never removed the inner primary so I can't give you first hand advice. Try to contact Mr. Wright I'm certain he will know what your best way to proceed is.

The seal was never in there since I've had the bike, and I think when they rebuilt the trans they just didn't see a seal on the starter so didn't know to replace it but I had the starter solenoid problem and when I pulled the starter for that I put that seal in and thought well that solves that problem. But that didn't stop the leak completely its still leaking a little, not like it was though. Mr Wright says I may have too much oil in the primary so I'm gonna drain oil put the 18oz he suggests in and see how it goes.

Hi Shawn, Yes do what Mr. Wright said and if it solves your problem great! If not from what I can gather from what you've said so far is that you have always had this leak since you've owned the bike and when you replaced the starter there was no seal. Not you but sometime in your bikes history someone was inept enough to forget to replace the starter seal. That same mechanic could have had the inner primary off for any number of reasons and left off one or more of the other seals as well. The past history of a bike is always a real treat to figure out.
