Hi all
Need some advise on my Starter not fully extending and engaging my Primary.
This is what I got:
-04 Ridgeback; Starter: Don’t know if the starter is stock? How can I find out from looking at it?
-Belt Drives Limited (BDL) Primary EVO900 (3”): Maybe not installed correctly? Shimmed correct?
- Slam Switch/Button: I got this a long time ago when the start button crapped out, and have been using it ever since.
-Brand New Braille Batt (Kept on Smart Trickle Charger) 735 Cranking Amps
I’ve had the bike since ’08-’09 and it’s been starting ok, (when it did start at all) I sometimes get a loud thud sound when I hit the Slam Switch, but a second try usually gets the job done. Now when I hit the Slam the starter extends and just spins, and sounds like an empty blender. I say “empty” cause it doesn’t sound like it’s crushing ice, (i.e. grinding gears).
I first thought about cleaning the starter solenoid coil, so I popped off the cover and it was pretty clean (See Pic)
So I troubleshot with the following steps:
1. Disconnected Batt.
2. Took of the Starter Housing on the Primary
3. Pushed the Slam Switch all the way in hard (like I always do) and the starter gear turns (slightly), rotates and extends to engage the Primary’s rear pulley, but it doesn’t extend all the way and it looks like the full contact surface of gears aren’t meeting. I then took a pair of pliers and pulled the starting gear to meet the pulley but it didn’t move. There was a little bit of play (left to right) in the starter gear. Is this normal?

4. The Primary’s Starter housing (outer support) is marred up a little.
See Pic of housing: There was a slight lip on the aluminum, so I grounded it down with my dremel and tried to clean it up, but got same results.
What would cause this? Over extending of starting gear? The starter gear isn’t extending all the way now, but the inside of the outer housing is coming in contact with it gear? Maybe the inside bushing is worn and causing it to get cocked?
5. I also checked the tightness of the starter gear screw, it was tight.
I checked out the BDL site and I can order a new starter housing support. Maybe it’s not aligning right when it extends?
Can the starter be getting weak and not extend all the way? Does a starter get weak, and not travel it’s full range of motion?
Do you think that the BDL Primary was installed incorrectly, with the incorrect distance from the starter/motor?
I have a chain secondary, (cuz I'm 300 lbs and snapped the belt a while back) and I thought that it was just dirt from the chain flinging crap on the starter gear, but I douched it down with WD40 and have the same results.
I understand that some guys on here have open Belt Drives, and it’s not a OEM (Original Engine Manufactures’) part, but what are you guy’s thoughts?
