starter leaking oil switch to open belt drive

so, my 05 mastiff had a wiring issue. The wire harness from the hand controls comes out of the bars and runs along side the right fuel tank. the tank rubbed through the harness to the stop switch wiring and bike would stall sometimes when turned sharp and have an extended crank to start. I then burned up the starter with all of the start attempts. I took the starter out and was unable to find a starter or parts. so I clean and sanded the brushes ect. and worked for a month but to to the high draw amperage and if i did not start within a couple seconds it would drain the battery. Took to a local custom bike shop locally and told them I need a starter. they purchased a starter and transferred the head/gear portion because that part is proprietary big dog. Bike started great with lots of torque but...started leaking oil, level was never dropping, oil level never low. On the weekend after thoroughly cleaning all the oil mess under bike I noted the return oil line from the filter adapter to the oil tank had a drip coming from the threads of the 90 deg. fitting in oil tank. I removed the line and fitting. replaced both and oil leak still there. Cleaned and re checked and found the oil coming from the starter....... took back to the shop and they found and showed me that the starter drive is allowing gear box oil through and filling the starter, why oil was never low. The drive is from my old starter and from being disturbed / removed, swapped is now leaking inside. Shop is now telling me of a place to send the nose cone portion of the original starter to be re machined and new seals. to the tune of 650.00 on top of the 500.00 starter i just bought. Should I cut my losses and buy the open belt I want anyways and apply the 650 towards open belt and put the new nose cone back on my starter and be done. Or spend the 650.00 to have a 1100.00 starter that will only fit my big dog primary. If I go open belt. what ones fit? Ultima 58-850? thanks......

Contact Curtis at http://wildsteedworx.com/ He sells Bigdog Motorcycle parts and should be able to either fix or replace your starter for less than the $650 the shop is trying to get for a starter. Curtis also sells the Baker 2.5 Open drive made for the BDM. It is best to reach him by e-mail or try the phone no on his website he may or may not be available but he will reply to your e-mail.

Seems like a lot of money being wasted on the starter. Curtis at wildsteedworks or Donna and Derrick...bigdogpartsking can probably get you hooked up. Also, do a search on the starter on here. There's a cheaper fix to stop the oil.
not taking big dog starter repairs right now according to website

If someone charges $650 to cut a relief in the nose they should be shot.

I'm curious, can you post a pic of the front of the starter, pic of starter gear. When you say new, where did you buy it? Does the oil relief look like this? Cause this one is too deep

I was unable to pick it up today, shop in neighboring town. tomorrow after work, I will send pics. This was not a cheep ebay starter, installed at a local repair shop. A ultima thunderfire. I had taken the starter out and apart a few months ago because is sounded "tight" dragging, if my bike did not start right away it would draw the new battery down, excessive current draw. When I took it apart it was full of muddy looking water/some standing water in it from washing bike, I cleaned it sanded armature and brushes and worked great but was acting up again recently. I took it to a local shop to have the carburetor and other things looked at. When I came to pick it up "clunk, then nothing. full battery. I left the bike to have the starter repaired. was told could not get parts. they installed a thunder fire but used the (nose cone?) from my old starter. In a matter of days I developed a oil leak. What saw was oil dripping from the threads of the oil return line at the oil tank. rode it a few days and oil level never dropped. replaced the oil line and fitting. thoroughly cleaned the area and re checked. that is when I discovered the leak from the starter and not oil. Took it back to the shop and they removed the starter and it had trans axle fluid in it and they determined the oil was coming from the primary through the nose cone ( don't know what to call it) I am going to bring my bike home because I don't think they know big dogs like they claim.

so I sent my starter to Jeff and Dead One Customs. They performed relief drain back cut, installed seals, replace bendix and was returned to me in Idaho in less than a week for 325.00. Rode for 2 weeks and came out this morning to a puddle under my bike. I was pissed but under closer inspection of leak I found that I now have a rear shock bleeding on my garage floor. now what? Anyone here know where to find seal kits for rear shocks on my 2005 Mastiff?

i had gear box pumping oil into my primary and then over filling to a point where it ran out at the starter.
Gear box is a gear pump and can generate its own pressure. Fitted a diff breather under my seat via a 1/4" hose to the g'box.
Hasn't leaked in 4 years.

did you but new, rebuilt, or send yours in for repair? Seal kit available? Web sight does not show suspension parts
I don't even look at his web site anymore, he has a lot more than what's on there, I got the shocks new, for the price, why would you mess around with rebuilding them.

There's a search feature on the right hand side. I'd have to say his website can't get any easier.

Here are the adjustable ones.
