Hey Delly, with the help of these guys, I pulled my plunger from the soleniod (starter still on bike) and it was covered with oil. Went ahead and pulled the starter yesterday and it was pretty covered inside. I'm in a bit of a pinch so I orded a new starter last night but took the old one to a rebuild shop this morning. He said everything looked good with the exception of the oil and the burnt smell. Hes supposed to get on it after lunch and I'll let you know what he says. I know this doesn't help you with preventive maintenance but may shed some light on what the oil will do to it sooner or later.

BDM has replaced my starter under warrenty in the past for the same leak and the starter being saturated.

Yes Gas is right. BDM replaced my starter on my 05 Ridgeback. But like always i pick their brain really hard. The only problem is the gasket. If your 05 is getting inner primary fluid inside the starter it is because of the gasket. It is the wrong gasket. To do the cutomer right Big Dog replaced the entire starter WITH the right gasket. So like RVH was stating he needed to get to his run where his buddy was on his indian. If his starter gets dryed out before he gets his replacment he could possibly get the proper gasket and be on the road.

If there is oil under the starter, especially on an 05, there is a very good chance that you do have a bad seal on the starter that will allow some oil from the primary to seep into winding of starter and eventually lead to a short.

As Gas and TJ, indicated, BDM did replace many of the suspect starters back then including mine. Always heard it was a seal problem with some of the starter they got from their suppliers and not sure of all the detail, but it may be just as simple as getting the right gasket or o-ring and replacing it.

Be careful though for if it is leakage going past that seal, it will get into the winding and short sooner or later. If you can fix it before then, good electrical cleaner that leaves no residue (make sure they shit is safe for plastic so not to remove the shelac and insulation coating off), will hellp clean any oil build up and should get you going.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Have you called BDM on it. They have been known to step up to the plate for issues like this that are known problems.

mY 05 leaks right out of the face of the starter you can see it after its cleaned up and ridden then with a light while its on the side stand. BDM says buy a new starter . bdm redesigned starter to fix known issue.
