Starter issues

I have a 2005 pitbull, w/s&s117, towards end of last season I had problems with motor not cranking over, starter would stick engaged and turning key off and hitting kill switch would do nothing. When I pulled out of storage this weekend I dug into a lil bit and realize the main power to starter from solenoid is split and corroded to shit. Is it possible to replace the wire or am I stick buying a whole new starter? And would this split/corrosion also cause the starter to stick engaged or is that more a solenoid issue?

You can fix the wire by slipping a piece of shrink tubing over it with a little silicon at the end, and maybe while you have it out clean the solenoid contacts and the plunger.

Are there any strands of the wire broken? if not proceed with the top inst.

Sounds like a new starter is the way to go. The wire can't really be replaced if it's really beat to hell it's soldered internally to the field coil. You would be better off buying a new field coil and get the wire with it.

With that said that still might not fix the entire issue. As you might need to replace the soloneid contacts too.

That doesn't look too bad.

Shrink tube over that should be fine. You can take the the 3 screws out and check the contacts and clean them up but youd be Best doing that work with the starter removed.

Do you have a local starter shop in your area? Most should be able to give you some help.

Again..really need to get that thing unplugged and off the bike before you get too much farther.

I always pull my positive battery lead when it's parked more than a day or 2 but I pulled battery soon as I found the wire, so it's safe in that aspect.

You can send the starter to Donna and Derek and they will send you a rebuilt starter, or send it to dead one customs (DOC), they rebuild them also.

I think every starter big dog used had or has the same problem with the rubber boots breaking down. I just noticed my Bulldog wire is bare. Thankfully its not corroded like the one on the picture.

Originally when mine did that I used black silicone to cover the bare wire until I pulled the starter for the tranny rebuild, and then I used shrink tube.
