wonder if someone could lead me in right direction, have 2006 117 s&s when i hit start switch the elec. motor just whiness, so i removed selenoid cover and pushed plunger in and still just whines as if nothing engaging. then i removed starter jack shaft seems to be in good shape, starter pinion gear seems to be in good shape, i put it in a vice and bench tested it & seems to function properly shaft pushes out spins gear, obviously its not under a load on bench what am i missing? forgeting? maybe bad/cracked jack shaft that doesnt work under a load? or weak spring behind the pinion gear, im at a loss

Yeah same thing happened on my AIH. The outer gear was fine. Everything spun out normal, but just wouldnt turn over the engine. It was the gear inside the starter that was chewed up. Just replaced the whole thing with a ultima thunderfire. No problems since.

Definitely a clear sign of improper drive clutch operation.
Can happen on any starter if the drive clutch goes bad.
You might want to consider our rebuild service if this is you're issue

Bad ground? Reinstall the starter. Take jumper cables and run one to the battery ground to the starter case. Take the other cable ends, clamp it to the engine then back to the battery (-) post or the frame as if chasing a better ground.

If there is no change having a good ground all the way around = Battery's CCA is suspect.

If it's the starter send it to Curtis.(KaptinAmerika). He's helped a lot of guys here on the forum and he's a supporting business.:2thumbs:

To be on the safe side, I would still send it to KaptinAmerika at wild steed worx. My shaft snapped on my starter and he goes through everything with a fine tooth comb to ensure you dont have any other bad parts in your starter. As I search through the forum I read nothing but positive feedback from his work. He'll keep you on the road.
