Starter Info

Just a kudo to FMB Choppers, I ordered a new chrome Ultima Thunderfire 2.0 kw starter from them Saturday a week ago received it Wednesday AM.
I installed it and it fires that big inch motor instantly! nice unit came with a built in solenoid plunger. 169.95 can't beat that......

That's good to hear , I was debating between the Ultima Thunderfire 2.0kw for $139.95 and 2.4kw for 159.95 and since I already have a low profile speed sensor decided to go with the 2.4
and as a side note if your bike is cranking harder than normal check that your battery cable hasn't vibrated a little loose or you can let the smoke out of the starter and destroy it.
Don't ask me how I know :bang:

Well.... I am not an expert on those things.... BUT... all I can say is when my one fucked up, Curtis, "KaptinAmerika" (WSW) did send me one to Spain and it starts my bike at the first push of the button.

Just in case you still are not aware, WSW will re-do your starters VERY nicely! :2thumbs:

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong but I do not think the 2.4 will fit in the 04 models. I recall reading somewhere on here that the jackshaft might be too long? I would do a search before you order one and waste your money.

I think it had to do with the speed sensor and and it sounds like flyinlow has already scoped that issue. I'm not sure that a 2.4 kw is necessary though, it will draw hard and pack a punch. Make sure your cables are good bro.

I believe I have that part covered, I have a 500 cca battery and have fabricated cables from high purity copper welding cable.

that'll work just fine! Also, just another heads up to all rigid owners.....check every bolt you can get to at least monthly, these rigids will shake your fillings out.....

I received my starter last night and installed it this morning, the solenoid bolt did contact the transmission bulge that was mentioned in an earlier post so I clearanced it and also had to reroute one oil line.
Cranked it over once I was done and all I can say is WOW that starter spins it over like there are no sparkplugs in it, my old starter even before I fried it would struggle on the first compression stroke and now it starts almost instantly.
I am sure I would have been fine with the 2.0 kw but with the problems I had before didn't want to take any chances.
If I were to do it over again I would probably go with the 2.0 so I wouldn't have to reroute the oil line but am completely happy with what I have now.

2.0 kw vs 2.4 kw

It looks like y'all may be sayin that the 2.4 kw starter/solenoid has clearance issue with speedo sensor & oil line.
The website for FMB and Ultima both show for the 2.0 kw model "Fits some stock applications on Big Twins where 7/8” longer body is not a problem", yet for the 2.4 kw model they do not discuss any clearance issue.
Any insight or clarification?

Also, my speedo sensor is 1/4" thick - is that a low profile sensor?

Thanks

Thanks for the good advice Alan, only had my Ridgeback for a few months and until now, the thought hadn't even crossed my mind. :2thumbs:

Yep, Curtis can rebuild your old one for much less than any new one, AND you will have the peace of mind of knowing it will fit. He can also add a slammer button if you want.
