While going over the K-9 checking for anything loose I noticed when I grab or press against the right side bottom starter end housing (don't know what else to call it) I have a very slight movement in the housing. It appears that all bolts are tight but I don't have the right length ball head allens to reach the bolts exactly. I know the starter is tight to the primary and I have had no problems.

Is this normal?

Does the soleniod move as well (the thing above the motor with the green wire going into it)?
DogVet, sorry for not responding sooner been out of the house just got home.

The area on the starter you are speaking of does not move at all. It seems the round chrome armature housing is flexing up and down about an 1/8 of an inch.

I just caught this this morning and have been trying to research this today. Here's what I found. BD service tech at a Big Dog dealer I shall not mention here told me from I was describing was probably where the armature housing and the starter come together there is an o-ring or seal and that what I'm feeling is the compression of the seal. I called another BD dealer and left a message for the service manager (out to lunch) to call me back but have not heard back from him yet. A local Harley Dealer has an 06 BD K-9 on the floor. I went there and put my finger on the same area as mine and no movement at all.

My service manual shows nothing (pics) of the starter. I don't know what brand of starter I have but am trying to find that out now.

If I have a problem I feel I have caught before any problems develope but it doesn't feel like it should move at all to me. Kind of puzzled at this stage.

Thanks for trying to help me out on this one:up:

Your starter motor is loose frome the housing, you'll need to remove the starter to get to the screws.

Thanks DogVet, I felt as this was going to be the case. I have not heard of this on here before and was puzzled as to why it came loose. Oh well minor problem, easy fix. Thanks again.

Has anyone had a proble with the rubber boot on the starter cracking from the heat?

absolutely Cynbahd. Mine did that to. They replaced those cables when they replaced my starter so mine are new as of now but I'm keeping my eye on it. If it starts to crack I'll shrink wrap it as the others have done.
