Starter CMM?

I sheared off the main shaft in my starter, and am hoping that's something I can replace on my own. I noticed the 2005 service manual information on the starter, but didn't include part information or an IPC that included shaft.

Any suggestions where I could get the part number and the part itself. Worse case, where I could get a starter or rebuilt starter?

Here's a link to the other thread where I posted some photos:

Hey Shane I pulled the shaft out of mine when I broke it, and took it and the gear to a starter/altenator automotive place and the guy was able to match it with one from a car starter. $10. :2thumbs:

Thanks for the input, all. I'll take the starter apart, and pull the rest of the shaft out of there and take it to a local place and see what they come up with. $10-$65 is sure a hell of a lot better than $450.

I tell you this place is the schiznit! I am by know means a wrencher and there certainly will come a day when something will need to be repaired/replaced on my sickle. With the wealth of knowledge along with everyone's willingness to help on this forum I am confident I will be able to wrench myself.
Kudos to BDB forum and its members :2thumbs:

Hey Snake - make sure your carb is set OK and you never backfire on start. Its a major reason for breaking the shaft. When u backfire it is like kick back on a kick start bike ans spins the motor backwards. For some reason stock BD starters (shaft) only spin in one direction. If u backfire with starter button pushed on, the backward spin shears the shaft

That's a good point. Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall a few backfires when I didn't used to have a problem. Great info.
