Stainless Creations Intake, run it with no screen?

Hey guys I've had trouble with my stainless creations "apocaclypse" intake. Basically after install I was hitting a wall around 4k rpms, it was so bad it was like hitting the rev limiter. I went from 078 up to 082 on the main jet with no improvement. On the advice of another lister I removed the screen from the intake, it's a very tight mesh with a heavy pleat in it. Dropped the main back to 080 and now it's running great. So, what do you guys think of running with no filter? I put about 4k miles on the bike every year, so I ride allot. I'm afraid of trying to make a less restrictive screen in case it gets sucked into the motor. Any ideas?

In my personal opinion .... running with a screen is just asking for trouble there Moe. See Gas's posting about the guys running sand through their intake ?

It looks like a lean condition though, pipes started to blue and the problem at 4k feels like fuel starvation. If I roll on easy I can usually get it up to redline, but if I accelerate hard it stops dead at 4. Once the screen came out the problem is completely gone.

I'm with the others in that I wouldn't like to run my bike without any filter - have you tried removing your bowl vent screw?

But again, screen removed, problem solved. There ain't much to this intake either, just a two piece clamp holding it on. I'll check it for an intake leak sul, and if SC can't give me any ideas I'll just have to toss it. It's a shame the thing is damn cool.

Just say no to running without a filter! Unless you like paying for annual engine overhauls! If that's the case, I'd give you a good deal on labor to overhaul your engine in the wintertime!

Dogvet,
So just where is the shitty side of the rainbow at? Anyone should be happy to let you put your hands on their motor. Sounds like a good deal to me.

moe, i may be totally off base with my thinking on this one and probably am, but it looks to me like the way the back tube is rotated it would act more like a venturi and create vacuum to the point of sucking air AND fuel back out of the carb causing low air and fuel levels. higher speed would cause more vacuum and a very lean situation. can the back one be rotated more toward the front????? just an old fart with too much time on my hands.:zz2cents: :zz2cents: :zz2cents:

I called Scooters where I got it from, and they said there are two styles of screen. I may have the the older style, so they are sending me a newer one. I'll post pics of the screen itself, it's really not all that restrictive, but I'm wondering if the heavy pleats are causing too much turbulence or something??

Moe if you are running a s&s carb. with a open intake you will have to pull the vent plug on the bottom left side of your carb its a allen plug to get it to run right. And go back to the 78 main.

What are those pipes your running there? I'm looking for something real loud and mean looking and those pipes look like what I'm looking for. Are they loud?

I went way up on the intermediate and high jets (.036, .083), and the problem is mostly solved, but still during hard accelleration it will break up at 4.5k rpms. I might be able to tune that out with the accellerator pump, but haven't had time to fool with it too much. I could not get any performance with the heavy, pleated screen. They have since sent me a less restrictive screen. I have not tried rotating the intake forward. Hope all that helps!

Hey, can you get a pic of that screen? I want to see if it looks like the one I got with mine! I have mine mounted with out the spacers and the back plate to motor bolt's! I did started the other night and ran it for a few second's, but still waiting on the parts!!

if I get a chance, but I gotta take the intake off to get it. It's a flat screen, no pleats. If you have a pleated screen, that feels more like a fabric than a metal, it's the restrictive one. The screen I have is thin and flat, and looks more like a window screen.
