i know thers been alot of belt squeak talk but,i talked to big dog today.they dont know anything about teflon pulleys.the guy said to try a panther belt which i read on the forum.the other thing he said to try shimming the pulley out.has anyone tried this one yet? thanks mobsta

Careful when you say you talked to Big Dog. Sounds like you talked to the dealer. Most dealers have a fast turn over on mechanics so they never get taught up on the issues with our dogs.

05 and newer models got Teflon coatings only. BDM did have a SB out on proper alignment and it was shimming the transmission not the pulley.
Be careful with your dealer or ask questions here first.

Some of us have been around a long time and know a bit about the issues with your bike.

Of course your local dealer isn't going to tell you about the teflon pulley. It means they won't get any money out of it.... Why are most dealers that way?????

I've got an 04 chopper, and I had my pulley done this past winter with the teflon (poly teeth) done by Supermax. No more chirp........ Well worth the money. Here is the Website.. SuperMax Belt Drives For Harley-Davidson Motorcycles If you want to take care of it yourself..


My local big dog dealer is the one that told me about Supermax, and he took my pulley off and sent her in for me..

First motorcycle dealership that I have ever been to, that was more interested in you and your bike, than making money off of you... Tell them that Redneck sent you...

I had the same "chirp" on my 2004 Ridgeback. Luckily it showed itself in early 2005. Took it to the dealer and they replaced it (under warranty) with a new pulley, teflon coated. Never "chirped" again as long as the drive belt is adjusted correctly.

Proper tension and alignment. Inspect the sprockets for tooth wear and replace if wear is noticable along with new belt. Mine would squeak when the belt would track over and rub the side flange on the rear pulley. The belt had glazed over on the side of the belt and I couldn't keep it off the side of the pulley due to wear on the sprocket. Others here have used soap, wax, and the cure-all WD-40. Only temporary fixes.

thanks for the teflon tip.when i said i talked to bigdog i meant the factory.i dont deal with the dealer here,given me enough grief.i do all my own work.this problem started at 2500 miles.now have 8000 miles.will get teflon.thanks again

Let me know how it turns out? I paid $500 shipped, for the candy apple color to match the bike.. Not sure if it was needed. I think it was $30 more then black. Figured what the hell... Let me know how much you end up paying. Like I said I went through the local Big Dog Shop, and I am assuming he got something out of it, but I can't imagine much......

I'm new so I'm not sure where to get this info so I figured I'd just ask. Don't mean to hijack the thread, just desperate! I just bought a 2004 Ridgeback and it chirps like mad. Where can I get the info on proper belt tension and alignment? When I picked it up the belt was way off to the primary side on the front pulley and I've slowly started turning in the primary side axle adjuster set screw to move it back on center. ANY help or pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated!(I put a little grease on the outboard side of the belt and it stopped for a day indicating the rubbing area) THANKS!

OK, I just did a search and apparently this problem is epidemic. Also it seems that there is no permanent solution (assuming proper alignment and tension) except maybe HD belt and teflon pulleys( or Sumax insert). Otherwise chapstick, wax, or silicon spray applied on side of belt whenever noise starts. Unless there is any new info I guess I'm SOL!

2004BC, New belt and rear sprocket will fix it. Do a search in the "How To" section and you will find what you need to know.

Try Supermax. I had the pulley done this winter. $500, expensive. But well worth it. No more chirp.... If I had noticed this post earlier. We could have talked about it on the phone.. Here is there website.. SuperMax Belt Drives For Harley-Davidson Motorcycles Give me a call if you have any questions. You can use some of the money you just saved, and put it towards the pulley

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm going to just dress/wax/whatever the belt whenever it starts to chirp for the summer. Come winter it gets permanently fixed! Belt and pulley! Happy trails!!!:cheers:

I have tried about everything on my 05 chopper to keep the belt from raising hell . I used all the items listed on this forum , with not much luck... I tried STP belt dressing , it is a clear dressing and I brushed it on.. It worked fine for 100 miles or so then the squeak was back and one hell of a mess on my white bike.. I done some research and found a product made by Dupont, It is called:
Dupont Teflon Multi-Use dry, wax Lubricant. This is available at your local Lowe's stores for less then 5 bucks.It goes on wet then dries to a wax film, after 300 miles I still feel the wax. I put it on my rear pulley and the belt , rode over 350 miles this weekend and no mess on the bike and NO SQUEAL.. I love this stuff, Hope it works for you.

drummer let us know after you get more miles on this Dupont Teflon Multi-Use dry, wax Lubricant, sounds a lot cheaper than new belt & sprocket.
