Yeah that may be it. The rim is stronger to road hazards and such but the hubs twist out the spokes from torque.

WOW,
never heard of that. I mean, it sounds logical that it would happen but I've never heard of that.

Would that really be a problem with the amount of power our bikes put out? or more like guys abusing their bikes or doing 'hole-shots' and stuff??

Spokes look great but the disadvantage is that you can't go tubeless. I've always got Green Goo on my bike and it's helped me out on several occasions. Once, I was able to ride my bike to Cycle Gear with the Goo inside, put it up on milk crates, remove the tire in their parking lot and have them repair my tire. Having a tubeless tire is a must for me. Just my 2 cents....

Not true about "can't go tubeless". I have 5000 miles on my 250 avon venom mounted on a DNA 80 spoke wheel (TUBELESS) and if I've added air, I can't remember when - no leakage).

Note that on this ebay listing it states sealed for tubeless application:

DNA 80 SPOKE 18x8.5" REAR WHEEL CHROME HARLEY CHOPPER:eBay Motors (item 140350957140 end time Nov-06-09 15:36:03 PST)

I agree with your shovel, i had spokes on my sporty with a 180 rear tire on a 18x5.5 rim. It came with a sealed middle strip and it never leaked on me.

How much power is too much power? I think that will depend on how many spokes and gauge of spoke.

But yeah they are stronger against road hazards. Look at the dirt bikes and bikes like the BMW GS line up. They all have wire wheels.

I have spokes on my dog and don't really like them....I would rather have aluminum. But don't agree that torque has anything to do with it. These are 80 spoke wheels. I don't believe the motor on a big dog would ever hurt them... Take a look at some of the aluminum wheels there is much material there between the hub and the rim.....

I have always heard that spoked rims are stronger when compared to mags although I have no supporting data to this claim. My initial thought is that mags are stiff one piece designs whereas spokes may give and withstand more abuse, like a skyscraper in an earthquake philosophy.

I have a Mutt with the spokes and they are quite difficult to clean, especially the rear. I find that eagle one chrome spray and wash takes off the majority of grime without scrubbing. I did not know about the issue with spokes loosening up and having to be re-trued. How often should this be done?
I would love a set of mag 5 spokes, but $1500 per wheel is a bit pricey for this guy.

I got spokes on my HD. I thought about replacing them with custom wheels, but will just sell the scoot instead.

Sometimes a member here will get new wheels and sell theirs at a great price, or there are BDM parts dealers on ebay where they are reasonably priced.

Someone will chime in if you want to replace with another big dog style of wheels.

Persnnally I like a spoke look. I'm considering powder coated fat spokes. I do ride hard :loony: I've only put 700 miles on my Mutt since I bought it about 2 months ago but I havent seen any twist or loosening of my spokes yet. I'm trying to find out how the fat spokes hold up before I buy them. I'll post what I find out about the fat spokes.

this is from hot bike magazine....

For all those who feel bigger is better, one of the hottest wheels Ride Wright offers is its 50-spoke Fat Daddy wheel. The wheels are highlighted by solid stainless-steel 3/8-inch spokes. Aside from the fat spokes, the way the wheels are laced gets a lot of attention as well. The spokes run straight out from the hub to the rim in a radial-lace fashion, as opposed to the more traditional cross-lace pattern in which the spoke exits the hub at an angle crossing over several other spokes.

While cross-lacing makes for a very strong and dependable wheel, Sam’s Fat Daddy wheels were developed and dyno-tested to be just as tough and reliable. In fact, the wheels are so tough, they’ve stood up to the abuse of AHDRA drag racer Valerie Thompson hammering the throttle on her daily rider, a 107ci ‘00 Fat Boy with 18-inch Fat Daddys. These wheels caught our attention, and since Sam’s shop is right in our backyard, we popped over to see how they’re built

I like the spoke wheel, but they are tough to clean. They are old school, and have come a long way since my old '50 Pan had them. I also have them on one of my Roadstars and my Mutt. The number of spokes and their gauge can make the difference in strentgh. Most after market spoked wheels are sealed so they can be run tubeless or you can seal them yourself. In all my 45 years riding on spokes I have never had a problem with them. Dennis Kirk has a lot of spoked wheels on his Ebay store. I haven't looked at sizes, but they were reasonably priced. Check it out.

Does anyone know who the wheel manufacturer was for the spoke wheels that came on an
'08 Mutt. I was washing the rear wheel last nite and found a broken spoke on the hub end. The cap on the end of the spoke that goes thru the hub was broken off. Bike has 12k miles on it and still running the original Venoms. Thanks
