Spitting gas from the card when open petcock

I need a little help with putting my carb back together.
I was going to take the carb off and clean it but ran out of time so all I did was disconnect the gas, unbolt the bottom mounting bolt from the back side and unscrew the 3 bowl screws. I also took out the screw on bottom of the bowl to drain the gas. I ended up putting all of this back together and put the gas line back on before putting the air cleaner on. When I opened the gas petcock, it started to spill out of the smaller black hose coming out the bottom of the carb and the hold next to where I have the pen pointed. I'm far from a mechanic but figured I could handle this. Any idea what I did or how I can get it to stop spilling gas so I can get this thing back together? Thanks in advance for the help!

I know this is a rookie question but can i take the bowl off with out taking the entire carb off? I tried earlier and couldn't get it.
Any threads on taking it off or putting it back on. Service manual I have doesn't have any info except for tuning.

I finally got it. I didn't realize there was a 4th screw holding it on (minor detail). At least I'll know that much next time I go getting myself in trouble. Mid 70's tomorrow and I'll be back on the road.:whoop:

Thanks for the help fellas.

Did you get it fixed?

After you drop the bowl, clean it out with some carb cleaner... If you leave the bowl hooked up to the fuel line you can test it off the bike. Turn the gas petcock back on (with a pan under your carb bowl) and see if it fills and turns off. If not and its clean... you will have to start to dig into it some more.

If more work is needed...Click the link in my sig, then pull up the card adjustment sticky... there is a link to a S&S carb manual...
