Stupid question.......When you install a spike air cleaner and your going down the road and it starts raining , how does the bike run with water going into the openings and into the carb?

I've ridden in rain so hard you couldn't hardly see 10 feet in front of the bike. It will miss a little bit now and then, but haven't had any problem. Cold water is good for cleaning the carbon build up on the valves.

Besides the sock, the spike cleaner is influenced by an oiled filter element. If you used a lot of the spray oil in a l ‘cleanable’ filter, water can really cut off the air and will choke the engine like Mr Wright says. Blacktopper’s bike quit in a bad rain in NE some years ago. Dried it out and it ran like a top.

Not to be a ball breaker, but, that A/cleaner in and of itself will choke the crap out of the engine. FWIW, it doesn't matter which way you face the point. Up, down, front, rear, sideways. They look cool though. As always, it's personal preference,

S&S has a decent selection of A/cleaners. Their tear drop, with a wide filter element, or Stealth, are both good performers.

They do, different back plate I believe.

I was driving in major rain once, the bike ingested some water, and momentarily bogged down while I was going ~50+. My natural response was to give it more throttle, then it suddenly cleared and it spun the back tire and fish tailed about 3 feet sideways before I gathered it back up. About shit myself. 
So if the rocker boxes are vented to the carb, you don't need to vent the bottom back of the crankcase. Right??

Nice! Very susceptible to the rain however, like the spike. I have the spike on one & the BigDog solid with the teardrop filter on the other. I just try not to ride in the rain.
