speedometer stops responding

So, I just bought the dog in the middle of winter and am now driving daily. I am wondering how much fucking problems I have inherited. The bike only has 1400 miles on it. It runs like shit ( I replaced the plugs -- which were all cruded up), had to adjust the clutch cable because of creep when I have the clutch in and now the odometer intermittently stops. I'll jump on the bike one time and it works fine, next time nothing. Can someone tell me what to look for. It almost seems like a loose wire?? God I hope this doesn't go wrong for me. I bought the dog thinking who could fuck it up with 1400 miles on it. Is this the way it is with these bikes -- constantly working on them? Anyway, had to vent. Any help with the odometer issue is definately welcome. Thanx for the help.
Steve.

You have a weak power up cycle. Are you keeping the bike on a battery tender.
The fix is to have the dealership flash your EHC. Right now it sweeps up to 60 and back when you turn the key on. With everything going on to start the bike it doesn't have enough power to power up the speedo.
So the fix is they flash the EHC and then after the motor starts the speedo does a second power up cycle.

Either way you need to keep it on a battery tender and don't use that enrichener when starting and if you have to turn if off immediately.

I'll be going past your area on the 6th or 7th heading to SLC. Maybe we can hook up for a beer in Twin Falls or there abouts!

I just bought a new battery a month ago with a tender -- it's on the tender all the time. Can you explain the weak power up for me. I thought with a new battery (from our local dealer) that it would take care of any weak battery issues. I am surprised on how much it takes from the battery to start (when cold). Before I changed the plugs about a week ago I cranked on it for just about 30 seconds and then nothing -- I had to put the battery on the tender for a half hour -- then it just barely started. Will the flash that your talking about help more than just with the spedometer issue? Another words, will the flash help out with the cranking power when starting cold -- plus help out with anything else? Thanx a bunch.

No the flash is only to fix the speedo issue. The new speedo's coming out aren't made from Autometer anymore so won't have this issue or the fogging up issue.

You starting is most likely caused by you and that enrichener. It should crank right up. But the enrichener will foul plugs in seconds hampering start up.
Just keep it on a tender and learn to start it with just a couple twists of the throttle and then use the throttle lock to hold it till it warms up.

Your manual states that the bike used 2% of the battery each day so it needs to be on the tender at all times.

If you are having starting issues then maybe you need your carb adjusted or your accelerator pump. It shouldn't be to hard to start.
But don't burn up your starter cranking on it. It gets real hot and will burn up causing you more problems.

I can stop by in a couple weeks and give you a lot of hints when I go by there.

See ya,

Cheese with your whine? Your carb needs tuned and your speedo need re flashed...Doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Sorry to be so stupid here. I have learned to not use the enricher (by what was said in this forum -- so we're good there). I didn't know it had a "throttle lock"? Where in the hell is that located? Thanx for all the great info. This forum is great.
Steve.

who needs it

just take the speedo off. i had problems with mine fogging up, then i found a crack in the bottom glass. only had 350 miles on it. started the whole 60 then 120 then back and forth. blah blah. so i just erased the problem.

Hey Steve is it still under warranty, if so take it to Poky Cycle. My dog runs awesome when it will start. Sometimes my speedo wont do the sweep, speedo locks on 55 and the right turn signal indicator stays on, with the key on or off it wont do anything, and the lights on the computer are all on. I have to undo the positive cable on the battery, the positive wire that runs across the top of the battery into the computer turns everything off. After a while it will start and run fine.

Okay, while in Colorado last week, my speedometer pegged at 120 mph (I was going 60 mph). Now the speedo is stuck at 120 mph. Any thoughts on the fix...is my speedo fried?

I went through three speedometers (all replaced by BDM) before the issue was solved. Last June they replaced the speedo and bracket and it has been trouble free since then. That has been my only issue with my '05 Chopper. Otherwise I have made several cross country trips worry free.

I just replaced my speedo this week....had the same problem and went through all the possible fixes and nothing.....$142 for new speedo

Steve,
you're not stupid. There are some 'growing pains' you will go thru but this place has alot of good information and member to help you thur them.

As for your battery issues, a member here once said "a battery is either charging or discharging." I just replaced my battery for the first time in over 4years and all I did was keep in on a tender so it's good that you picked one up.

Good luck with the rest.:2thumbs:

So who are they being made by now. I have had 3 speedos replaced and now this one is starting to act up. Its bouncing around up and down about 5 mph at a constant speed. tired of playing the speedometer game. last time the dealer had my bike for a month for the speedo and new mount. and the new speedo is fogging up so I am assuming this is still one of the older speedos.

Thanks,
Chris

Steve,
I had some problems with my speedo working intermittently, it was a loose connection on the tranny. I tweaked the connector so it fit tighter and it fixed the problem

They aren't out yet but they are the speedo's you see on the new Wolf and will be retroffited to 05 and newer bikes. Don't know who the supplier is but do know that it isn't Autometer.

Well hopefully being made by new manufacturer, they will be better. This could get expensive later on down the road changing out speedos.

I would like to see if i can find out more info on the new ones.

Steve, Throttle lock is located under the throttle on the handle bar. This is the screw with a spring under the starter button.

I suggest you check all the recalls have been done on this bike while you are into trouble shooting the starting issue.

Yes we do have frequent issues with the Dogs. Be patient, check if your bike is still under warranty, take it to a dealer, atleast to get you up to speed with recalls.

Ray is right on, I had exactly this same thing on my 07 Mastiff however the EHC had to be replaced to take the new update. No problems since.
