Speedometer Not working Again

Energy One
I have a 2002 Bulldog.....After changing handlebars, speedo didnt work, and I gave up and took it in !! Shop said the ground wasnt the best, but after fixing that , it still didnt work...Turned out to be the sensor, was replaced, and worked fine..Rode the bike for about 150 miles, was all working fine.....As of last night, now the speedo doesnt work properly..It will sweep on start up, and wont register while riding, or it will sweep while riding, or do nothing at times.... Any suggestions to where to look? Is this typical? Tachometer works fine next to it..

Take a look a Value teck, (vendor) order the dakota digital.. also if you dont want to buy a new one check the wiring harness from the speedo for any frayed wiring/loose connections.

If you want to replace I have a black speedo that I may sell to you, I was keeping it for a spare since I ordered the dakota digital.

Thankx for the info..Not trying to replace speedo unless I absolutely have to..Ive dumped alot of $$ in the last 6 months into it, just wanna enjoy it !

That was what my speedo was doing. I replaced the speedo and it did the same thing. Turned out the sensor was making contact with the gear inside the trans. It chewed up the end of it. When I started, it would sweep and then not register. I had to clean it every 100 miles or so to get the pieces of the old one off the magnet. I changed the trans fluid a couple of times as well. Works fine now.

The light for the tach works, as does the tach...The lite for the speedo will flicker, stay on, then go off, and keep sweeping off and on......Stillt hink its the sensor? or possibly an electrical issue with power or ground??

If the light is flickering...sounds like power or ground as you mentioned. I would still pull the sensor and clean it off though. Doesn't hurt.

OK..I checked for power, 11.8v to the sensor..11.8 volts to the speedo, .. I had speedo apart, no broken wires, all looks good..... I talked to a friend today, and said it just maybe the new sensor..Something with the magnet in the sensor, just like jr03 chopper mentioned...So i tried something tonite..Maybe Im missing something, but tried to rule some things out......I just turned bike ignition on, but didnt start it......I bounced bike around, had seat off, moving all connectors, and wires, and the speedo only reset itself intially.....If there was a loose ground or power lead, wouldnt it have been acting up while just turned on???? Starting to think more on the sensor issue...Thoughts??

I wouldn't rule out the connections inside the speedo itself. Speedo was working prior to the bar swap?? I wouldn't think that changing the bars would jack up the speed sensor?? Just say'n

I wouldnt think so either....It must have been a coincidence..The sensor was replaced, and it worked fine for maybe 100 miles.....Seems odd that the sensor would go, then 100 miles after the speedo would go.....

Well I spent a little time troubleshooting, and after all that, I determined the problem was the wire from the speedo head to the connector from the sensor...The insulation looked a bit melted near 1 of the rocker boxes...I replaced the 3 conductor wire, and so far so good, alls working.........Thankx to all for your help
